You’d think maybe I could avoid this sort of thing since I’m only taking the one class this term, but I still managed to lose sleep to schoolwork this weekend, more so than the usual “stay up late on Sunday writing the reading summary due Monday,” even — and the onset of Daylight Savings Time did not help one bit, oh no. So this afternoon (after class and working out and lunch and a short stint at WFFC before I had to admit I was tired) I have been drinking lots of tea and doing my best to stay awake, and it’s proving rather difficult to keep myself out of bed until dark. But I must perservere! The monkeys demand it! (more…)

A short version of the weekend, in numbered list form:

  1. Conferences attended and new journals started because the old one was full of notes
  2. Books purchased (Safe Food by Marion Nestle and Eat Here by Brian Halweil), and hours driven to and from Corvallis for the conference.
  3. Hours of tapes filled with recordings of talks, small sessions attended (i.e. not keynote or endnote), business cards collected (one from the Ecotrust guy promoting the Farmer-Chef Connection conferences, one from a very kind OSU geography professor, and one from an NYU food studies program graduate who now works for a Seattle market research firm that gathered the data I need for my book on what happens now that organic is mainstream), and Marion Nestle autographs collected like the fangirl I am.
  4. Fountain pen cartridges emptied while taking the aforementioned pages and pages of notes, and total tea bags consumed at Allison’s house and at the conference.

I could go on and on, but I think you’re getting the idea. (more…)

Today there’s not a lot a lot going on in my brain besides excitement about the fact that I’m going to see talks by Marion Nestle at OSU tonight and tomorrow at the Small Farms Conference. I realize that this makes me a giant geek, but what else is new? (more…)

I got the job! Big love to everybody who thought good thoughts on my behalf (and extra bonus love to Beth for the cool custom card mojo). I’m training on Friday morning at 10:30, Saturday at 7, and Sunday at 10. My first solo shift will either be Monday right after class, or Tuesday afternoon, and after that I’ll be working just two days a week and random shift coverage, which is entirely perfect for my class-taking, freelance-working, WFFC-volunteering schedule. Hippieliciousness here I come! (I’m so relieved to have a cooking job that doesn’t involve vast quantities of bacon, oh yes.)

…or so Wendell Berry would have us believe. I’ve never actually read any Wendell Berry, but that’s about to change. Today I signed up for Sustainable Agriculture, an environmental studies class at the University of Oregon. (more…)
