Monkey Monday: mysteries and more. 12 October 2009 12:16 pm

Saturday’s mail was a sad package with a pre-printed note from the U.S. Postmaster, apologizing for the inconvenience and the delay and so on and so forth.
Inside the package was a British Royal Mail envelope redly stamped “RECEIVED WITHOUT CONTENTS.” The customs form showed that the package was sent as a gift by the fantastic Megan H., the mastermind who pointed me to Cathy’s Vegan Brunch giveaway back in May. Here’s my post about getting lucky in that and one other contest, and here’s my late August whining about how the book hadn’t yet arrived. Pout, pout, pout… as I emailed Megan earlier today, it’s like the universe is punishing me for cheating the contest or something. So weird. (more…)
Monkey Monday: shock and surprise edition 5 October 2009 10:38 am
Posted by Tracy in : monkeys, news, reading, weird, writing , 1 comment so farHoly cats, readers. Gourmet magazine is ending after this year’s November issue. Or at least that’s the word from the New York Times restaurant blog, brought to me on Twitter via Doug “Big Gay Ice Cream Truck” Quint (thanks Doug! I don’t know if I can make your goodbye party this Friday but I will not let this season end without trying your awesome-looking hot chocolate!)
Anyway. Lots of my favorite food writers have contributed to Gourmet over the years, and while I’m sure they’ll find other homes for their work, it’s still weird to see this latest symptom of the death of print media. So weird. (Also, so much for working up the self-confidence to have ambitions of joining my favorites on those pages. Alas.)

Not yucky microwave stuff, but real popcorn, homemade in a pan on the stove, with salt and pepper and nutritional yeast. That’s what makes this a food story. I’m posting it this Monkey Monday because it’s not going to get any more timely, and because it’s pretty freaking random (also, y’know, Bubbles). Anyway. Here goes.
When I got home from Holland last Thursday, (more…)
Monkey Monday: Burger King is weird 5 January 2009 2:13 pm
Posted by Tracy in : consumerism, food snobbery, news, random, restaurants, silly, weird , 2 commentsFull disclosure: I have never been a fan of Burger King. Even when I ate fast food burgers, theirs were my least favorite, and not just because BK, like McDonalds, does not offer mayonnaise as a condiment — a deadly insult to my taste in fries, which once caused Moon Monkey housemate Penny to tell me “Sometimes you’re so Dutch it hurts.” (Need mayo with your fast food fries? Wendy’s and Roy Rogers both provide. I’m just sayin’.) But: back to burgers, and my dislike of Burger King’s in particular (in case you were wondering, there’s a point to this diatribe: I want to write about a few weird BK advertising campaigns, so I thought I should make my prejudices clear ahead of time).
Here is the reason for my beef with Burger King burgers (ha, ha, pun intended), above and beyond similar-ish offerings at other places: in pursuit of the dubious goal of making fast food crappiness taste “flame broiled,” BK does something to their mystery meat patties that makes them taste like smoke, which I hate. To me, smoke tastes like failure. (more…)

Yay pretty flowers! (more…)
