I was on a posting roll this week, readers, but then yesterday I got distracted and completely forgot to post the best which I had been saving for last: pictures of two specialty pies from Pizza Research Institute in Eugene, OR. We got them the week of Peter’s graduation, which means I’ve been meaning to post about them, and PRI, for not quite a year now. Whoops. But better late than never, right? Right. So here goes.

Don’t worry, there are bigger versions of these pictures later.

Some of you may be asking, “Wait, Tracy, Pizza Research Institute?” Why yes, dear readers unfamiliar with Eugene, that would be the establishment with the unforgettable slogan “Tomorrow’s Pizza Today.” (more…)

Let me show you a little composition I like to call: “Lentil Salad, F*** Yeah!”

Lentil salad.

That’s my favorite lentil salad, on a bed of green leaf lettuce and topped with feta cheese. Not just any feta, though, but the nigh-legendary Bulgarian feta. Let me explain. (more…)

All right, party people, I’m pretty sure this is the last post in my series on traveling super-fancy Virgin Atlantic Upper Class style. The first was during the trip out to my Opa’s funeral early last month, then a few weeks later I showed off my flying fancy schwag (and the Virgin Clubhouse at Heathrow, OMG, and yesterday Friday I posted a bit about the actual in-flight experience. But I have, in a sense, saved the best for last, which is to say today I’ll be writing about what I ate on said ridiculously luxurious flight.

Foto Friday: Linguine Alfredo recipe, for Piett. 15 January 2010 11:08 pm

So I’m back from Holland and recovering from the trip, but still pretty freaking tired and nowhere near done uploading and organizing all the pictures I took. Today’s photo post was going to be all about flying fancy-style, but like I said, I haven’t quite got those pictures processed. Instead, I’m going to blog my dinner, which happens to relate back to my trip in more than just the “so tired, can’t get stuff organized” way. You see, on Tuesday night my brother Piett and I made a huge pasta dinner for my parents, my Oma, my aunt Ingrid, uncle Dako, their daughters Stéphanie and Claudia, and Stéphanie’s boyfriend Raymond (to be perfectly fair, Claud made her own food but I was still happy to have something that almost everyone could agree to eat). We cooked 1 1/2 kilos of spaghetti and three different sauces for people to mix and match to their own tastes: tomato-meat, tomato-vegetable sauce, and creamy pesto. Piett was an awesome sous-chef, and somewhere in the chatting over cooking we got to the topic of Alfredo sauce. My basic point was that it’s super-easy, and Piett said he’d like me to show him how to make it some time. While this post is not the video podcast recipe he suggested, it’s a step in that direction.

And lots of pepper!
Linguine Alfredo: it’s what was for my dinner tonight.

Something fun to do tonight? 1 December 2009 2:59 pm

I know, I know, where’s my ridiculous post-Thanksgiving update? (It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost exactly a week since we started all the cooking.) My guess is it’s in the same hiding place as my motivation to work on finals. Anyway, this event should be interesting, if only for the juxtaposition of Anna “if world hunger didn’t motivate you to take my mom’s advice to eat less meat (or none), how about climate change?” Lappé with Julie “did I mention I’m a butcher now?” Powell.

Knowledge of this reading was brought to me by Food Sociology classmate Sam Kressler. Thanks Sam! You rock! For more information, check out the full description at KGB Bar’s website. (I just could not bring myself to cut and paste all their text; I may be slow getting back into gear after the long weekend, but that’s just too much cheating.)
