So yesterday I posted the following picture to Twitter and Tumblr via Instagram on my iPhone (remember that comic I shared on Tuesday with a character reading news from “this thing I can’t put down to save my life”? Yeah, that’s me. Anyway):

Experimenting with coffee-by-weights-not-volumes, as described in this week's New Yorker (yay annual food issue!)
Exciting!

And today I’m going to elaborate considerably on that picture. Because that’s just how I roll. (more…)

Monkey Monday: long weekend edition 11 October 2011 8:05 am

Bear with me, readers: this post is late because our cable modem is on the fritz so I have been composing this post on my iPhone, no joke. (I started out literally thumb-typing in my phone’s web browser until I found the WordPress app, and now I’m still thumb- or index-finger-typing, but in a less cumbersome interface, so yay for that.) Which makes for a sort of clever transition to the first item I wanted to post today, which I had been considering as Monkey Monday fodder even before the passing of Steve Jobs (really!) So that’s one thing coming up. There’s also pictures: some in honor of World Egg Day, which was yesterday (again, I would’ve been on time except for ridiculous technical difficulties) and also to document the Tea and Biscuits of Triumph (which is more or less the Tracy analog of the Warren Ellis Cigarette of Victory). Here we go…

Tuesday tasting: bike trip beers, part one 14 July 2009 3:17 pm

I learned a new appreciation for lagers on this bike trip in Holland, which is that hoo lady do they ever go down deliciously on a hot, sweaty summer day. In particular, I have never enjoyed a Heineken as much as I did with our rijsttafel dinner in Hoek van Holland — but honestly, my judgment was probably completely ruined that night by all the babi pangang spek. NOM NOM NOM. Anyway. It turns out I’m way too long-winded to write just one post about all the beers I tasted during Bike Trip! Holland! 2009! so I will break things up into shorter posts, organized in chronological order. Our first stop is

Erik de Noorman, Huisbrouwerij Klein Duimpje

Tea for Tuesday: souvenir edition. 26 May 2009 7:50 am

So right after my finals week tea-fueled all-nighter of Wednesday wackiness, I celebrated the end of the term by handing in my vitamin C paper (about which I would later have an anxiety dream, but that’s neither here nor there except yesterday Ansley posted a comment wondering about our grades) and going on a food tour of Flushing, Queens. The expedition was organized some of my fellow graduate students, and atttended by many more. It deserves a full writeup which I’ll get to one of these days (a recurring TracyFood theme, I know) but today’s post is about a little souvenir I brought home from an as-yet-unidentified Chinese grocery store on Main Street in Flushing’s Chinatown:

A more readable shot of the label.

Yep, that’s right, a can of tea. (more…)

Foto Friday: Vermont vacation touring (and tasting) highlights 9 January 2009 9:54 am

On Saturday, 20 January 2008, Peter and I took the Amtrak Ethan Allen up to the end of the line in Rutland, VT, to visit my brother Piett. The kitties did their best to keep us home with their cuteness:

Bye, Otis cat! Bye, Iggy Pop!

but we managed to escape. We got into the Land of Opportunity on Saturday night, had pizza and beer before bed (how can sitting still on a train be so fricken tiring?), then a nice lazy Sunday that concluded with dinner at Little Harry’s, where I enjoyed the hell out of the striped bass in green curry sauce with lots of vegetables. Also, Switchback Ale? Good stuff. And the best TracyFood story of this trip to Vermont is also beer-related: on Monday, December 22 we visited Long Trail Brewery, in Bridgewater Commons. (more…)
