Tea for Tuesday: three with Allison. 3 February 2009 12:59 pm

So. Long ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and Allison lived at the House of Infinite Monkeys in Eugene (and some time before then, too), we used to go out to tea at a little place called Savouré in Eugene. For a while it was a near-weekly ritual, but then the prices went up and we cut back to twice, and eventually once a month. (Later, Savouré moved to a new location, with only a retail area, so we couldn’t go out to tea there any more — very sad.) But. In its glory days (yes, I think Bruce Springsteen won the Superbowl, and you’d better not have a problem with that), full tea at Savouré involved one of those fabulous three-tiered presentations of sweets (petit fours, among others), savories (tiny sandwiches, natch), and in between, scones with clotted cream and jam. Similar setups were available at two of the tea places we visited last week, and now I sort of wish I’d tried them, which is pretty high praise for a tea place. Anyway. Here’s quick reviews of where we went, before I forget. (more…)

Tea for Tuesday: for health 9 December 2008 11:59 pm

Another herbal tea this Tuesday — an herbal tea genre to be exact. You see, last Friday I came down with my traditional end-of-the-term Martian death plague (which of course was completely awesome for my eel paper–writing, as you may imagine). Aches (not just from riding the mechanical bull at Mason-Dixon for Ophelia’s not-a-birthday-party), stiffness (even after yoga), chills, dizziness, general feeling that the contents of my head might be about to melt or explode (or both), you know the drill. Stuff to whine about, and of course I did (and am still doing so, clearly). But I knew I was really sick, and not just whining for the sake of whining, when I had my first cup of echinacea tea — and it tasted good. (more…)

Restaurants remembered: Taco Loco, Laguna Beach, CA 16 April 2008 4:55 pm

I find myself all sentimental and full of remembrances of the past ten or so years now that it’s all official-ish that we’re moving to the East Coast (and speaking of which, I spent a nerve-wracking few minutes on the phone with NYU graduate admissions yesterday morning, confirming that I was in no danger of meeting any deadlines even though April 15 is a pretty common “reply by” date — phew!) If I had a TARDIS, I would use it to borrow some money from my future self with which to spend a month or so touring the West Coast with Peter in the TARDIS and on our tandem, visiting people and eating at whichever of our favorite places are still around (although I guess with a time machine I could even go back to our closed favorite places when they were still in business… dude, where is my TARDIS? I digress.) One place I’d definitely like to revisit is Taco Loco of Laguna Beach. (more…)

Random brain snacks, from my browser tabs to yours. 15 January 2008 9:40 am

Let’s see if I can prevent yet another Firefox crash! Here’s a little smorgasbord of delicious internet randomness, ranging from book reviews to music videos, all food-related (no, really).

First, here’s a review of Kitchen Literacy by Ann Vilesis, which I returned, unfinished, to the library this week because somebody else had it on hold. I never really got into this book, but I am way into EL‘s use of the term “retrovore”, oh yes.

Next, an old Slate piece about chefs in film, complete with little clips of movies I’ve either seen or feel vaguely obligated to see now, if only to take notes on depictions of gender in films about food and cooking. (Um, can you tell I’m supposed to be writing a project proposal for my anthropology class? Eeek.)

Here’s a good rant about what it means to be a professional cook — both good and the bad bits. (more…)

Restaurant remembrance: Mitae Ramen, Costa Mesa, CA 11 September 2007 9:29 pm

Over dinner last night Peter told me some sad news: Mitae Ramen has closed. According to his sources, the lady who owned it died a few years ago, and the food and business had suffered ever since. I am glad I missed its decline and fall, and happy to remember Mitae as one of our favorite places to eat in Orange County. The following is a slight reworking of my old Everything2 writeup on the subject. (more…)
