What I’m up to: awesome weekends. 26 February 2010 11:30 pm
Posted by Tracy in : consumerism, eating, events, fangirl, friends, fun, movies, not even vegetarian, nyc, photos, pictures, pizza, random, restaurants, reviews, school , 1 comment so farSo this weekend Peter’s out of town for macho male bonding stuff which I sincerely hope does not involve getting buried by the snowicane or whatever I’m supposed to call this mess of wet and cold slushing everything up all over the place for the snowiest NYC February on record, wow (shouts out to Ansley for that fun fact, and also a pretext for delicious, delicious lunch at Veselka this afternoon, nom nom nom). But seriously, just look at the poor planters at our building’s entrance, for monkeys’ sake:

I think the super’s whole family has been worked keeping that path clear these past 36-odd hours.
Anyway. I have two excellent reasons to brave the frozen wilds of New York City this weekend, and I am going to tell you all about them, starting… now.
The Foodprint Project
To be perfectly honest, I’m not 100% sure what The Foodprint Project is, but there are so many awesome people involved that I cannot wait to be a part of it any way I can. And oh darn, hearing awesome people talk about the art and culture and politics of urban food systems and more? Geez, it’s like exactly what I came to grad school for, only free and I get to design my own homework! So that’s tomorrow, Saturday, February 27, from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at Studio-X, 180 Varick St., Suite 1610, New York, NY 10014.
Just Food’s CSA in NYC conference!
Ok, I do know what this event is about, which means the conference should be pretty freaking awesome. Community Supported Agriculture is the answer, doncha know, and I am eager to learn more about how it works in NYC and how I can help, because: awesome.
So that’s my plans for this weekend, but last weekend was pretty excellent, too, so (more…)
Restaurant review (and flashback): Hotel Utse, Kathmandu 13 October 2009 10:33 am
Posted by Tracy in : Kathmandu, nepal, pictures, restaurants, reviews, school, travel, writing , 1 comment so farHey party people, remember how I was in Nepal two years ago? Yeah, me too. Today I’m rocking a bit of a head cold, so I’m posting another reworking from last year’s food writing class, this piece was written for the travel writing assignment. Professor Sax was particularly entertained by the lede, and I’m still pretty proud of it myself. I’ve updated this version to correct some typos, and incorporate a few of her suggestions, as well as links and pictures.

If you eat only one meal in Kathmandu, make reservations for dinner at Krishnarpan, the restaurant at Dwarika’s Hotel, rightly recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its celebration of Nepalese art, architecture, and culture, including food. But if you have more opportunities to eat in the capital of Nepal — and I hope you do — try the restaurant at the Hotel Utse, on the outskirts of the Thamel tourist district.

Hustling-bustling Thamel. (more…)
Monkey Monday: mysteries and more. 12 October 2009 12:16 pm
Posted by Tracy in : books, eating, friends, monkeys, nyc, politics, random, restaurants, reviews, weird, whoops , add a commentThe Vegan Brunch saga just took a turn for the weirder, party people. Saturday’s mail was a sad package with a pre-printed note from the U.S. Postmaster, apologizing for the inconvenience and the delay and so on and so forth.
Inside the package was a British Royal Mail envelope redly stamped “RECEIVED WITHOUT CONTENTS.” The customs form showed that the package was sent as a gift by the fantastic Megan H., the mastermind who pointed me to Cathy’s Vegan Brunch giveaway back in May. Here’s my post about getting lucky in that and one other contest, and here’s my late August whining about how the book hadn’t yet arrived. Pout, pout, pout… as I emailed Megan earlier today, it’s like the universe is punishing me for cheating the contest or something. So weird. (more…)
Tuesday tasting: bike trip beers, part one 14 July 2009 3:17 pm
Posted by Tracy in : food snobbery, geekery,Holland, local food,Netherlands, reviews, taste test, travel , add a commentI learned a new appreciation for lagers on this bike trip in Holland, which is that hoo lady do they ever go down deliciously on a hot, sweaty summer day. In particular, I have never enjoyed a Heineken as much as I did with our rijsttafel dinner in Hoek van Holland — but honestly, my judgment was probably completely ruined that night by all the babi pangang spek. NOM NOM NOM. Anyway. It turns out I’m way too long-winded to write just one post about all the beers I tasted during Bike Trip! Holland! 2009! so I will break things up into shorter posts, organized in chronological order. Our first stop is

Tea for Tuesday: three with Allison. 3 February 2009 12:59 pm
Posted by Tracy in : friends, fun, nyc, pictures, restaurants, reviews, tea , 1 comment so farSo. Long ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and Allison lived at the House of Infinite Monkeys in Eugene (and some time before then, too), we used to go out to tea at a little place called Savouré in Eugene. For a while it was a near-weekly ritual, but then the prices went up and we cut back to twice, and eventually once a month. (Later, Savouré moved to a new location, with only a retail area, so we couldn’t go out to tea there any more — very sad.) But. In its glory days (yes, I think Bruce Springsteen won the Superbowl, and you’d better not have a problem with that), full tea at Savouré involved one of those fabulous three-tiered presentations of sweets (petit fours, among others), savories (tiny sandwiches, natch), and in between, scones with clotted cream and jam. Similar setups were available at two of the tea places we visited last week, and now I sort of wish I’d tried them, which is pretty high praise for a tea place. Anyway. Here’s quick reviews of where we went, before I forget. (more…)
