Foto Friday: touring Gustiamo’s with Radishes and Rubbish 19 June 2009 5:07 pm
Posted by Tracy in : consumerism, eating, food snobbery, local food, nyc, pictures, school , 3 commentsSo last weekend I went back to Eugene to visit Peter during his department’s graduation festivities. It was… surreal, and I’m very impressed that he’s managing to get any work done in a setting that made me constantly worry that Bush was still president. Eek. I did manage to revisit several of my favorite things to eat in Eugene while I was there, which leads me to the subject of food tours, which is as good an excuse as any to finish writing about one I took back during spring break (I know, awkward transition, but today I am beating my little hater of writer’s block perfectionism).
On Friday, March 13, Gallatin senior Annie Myers led a small band of intrepid explorers (gastronauts?) from NYU’s Radishes and Rubbish club to a warehouse in the Bronx, which despite the date, was not as ominous as it sounds:
See? The warehouse in question is home to Gustiamo, a small import company whose specialty is nothing less than the finest foods Italy has to offer. (more…)
Report: “Room to Grow” mini-conference at NYU, 4 February 2009 10 February 2009 1:31 pm
Posted by Tracy in : agriculture, environment, events, garden, geekery, local food, nyc, people, school , add a commentAs you probably guessed from the title of this post, on Wednesday 4 February 2009, I attended the “Room to Grow: Envisioning Urban Agriculture at NYU” mini-conference. It was a great way of getting up to speed on gardening efforts around campus, and inspiring pictures of city farms and gardens always do a Tracy good. Plus I got to plant kale in a nifty newspaper pot (you can bet I snagged an extra to dissect, in the hopes that I can learn the relevant origami), hang out with other NYU gardening geeks, and there was tasty food, much of it locally grown. All told, it was a fabulous evening. (more…)
Monkey Monday: feeling fishy 3 November 2008 2:27 pm
Posted by Tracy in : fish, geekery, local food, news, school , 1 comment so farSo I broke open a browser tab to start writing this Monkey Monday post in response to this fascinating Wall Street Journal article about the use of canned mackerel as currency in U.S. prisons. I mean, dudes. There’s a food geek paper to be written there for sure.
Unfortunately, I can’t use it as my final research paper topic for Comparative Cuisines: I’m allowed to write about pretty much anything as long as it’s contemporary and outside the U.S. So today I’m rocking the NYU library once more, letting my geek flag fly, as it were… and I think I’ve stumbled into something really good! I call it…

Monkey Monday: post-Thanksgiving edition (with obligatory pictures) 26 November 2007 10:46 pm
Posted by Tracy in : baking, cooking,CSA,dessert, eating, friends, garden, local food, pictures, seasonality , add a commentThe very short version goes like this: we ate sooooo well last week! First, and completely unrelated to Thanksgiving, I feel obliged to brag about the fact that Peter and I made éclairs:
I made the pastry cream and chocolate glaze from recipes in The New Best Recipe; Peter made the pâte à choux from a recipe he found online, and cut a corner off a plastic bag to make an impromptu pastry-filling thingy (the backup plan was to use a turkey baster, but we’re really glad it didn’t come to that). The results? Delicious. Not unlike our awesome Thanksgiving dinner, which (being vegetarian) also did not involve a turkey baster in any way, as you’ll see if you click past the break: (more…)
No real post today! 12 September 2007 6:45 pm
Posted by Tracy in : cheese, friends, garden, local food, school , 2 commentsInstead, I have been busy eating the most delicious huevos rancheros ever (Cook’s Illustrated, January-February 2006 issue), watching movies and riding Pepe with Peter, and picking another few pounds of gorgeous ripe tomatoes from my garden, because at this point it might actually be easier than falling off a log. After I post this I’ll be taking one more practice GRE and getting a good night’s sleep and suchforth (having a really excellent day beforehand is an entirely appropriate way to get psyched up, right?) Everybody think good thoughts for me tomorrow morning from 9:30 AM Pacific time onwards, okay? Thanks.
Meanwhile, if you’re really starved for something delicious to read, check out Ella’s fantastic response to last week’s mac ‘n cheese challenge (so awesome!) Also I enjoyed New York magazine’s recent takes on the locavore phenomenon: My Empire of Dirt, an experiment in Brooklyn-style subsistence farming and Local Shmocal: Our critic weighs in on the latest wave of foodie correctness. If you’re still bored after that, please consider taking my pop quiz, and I’ll be back tomorrow, no doubt with some sort of comfort food recipe suitable for assisting in my recovery from freaking computer-based standardized test (urrrgh).
P.S. I solemnly promise I will not remember 7-11 with a Slurpee again until next year.
