First things first: you probably don’t remember me, and that’s okay. I wasn’t expecting to meet you at the 2003 Alternative Press Expo or I might have been more prepared to offer a body part for you to sign. Or maybe I would have been just as starstruck as I was to run into you by surprise, at your table next to Stephen “Bob the Angry Flower” Notley’s. I remember that I totally flushed and couldn’t really make eye contact as I looked through your merch, wishing I had money to burn, since even then (holy cats, five years ago) I had been an admirer of your comics for many years. But I digress.
As a longtime reader of your fantastic strip, The K Chronicles, I thought I knew and loved your way with food. (more…)

Posted by Tracy in : Morning Glory, books, cooking, eating, food snobbery, ingredients, pictures, restaurants, vegan , 2 commentsWritten all weekend, finally posted Wednesday, backdated to Monday for extra confusion! Very quick summary: You (and everyone you know) need(s) a copy of Vegan With a Vengeance, and I have pictures to prove it. TastingMenu had an excellent post about tip-sharing. It’s Jen’s last week at Morning Glory, and she rose above and beyond the occasion with an amazing specials menu. Later this week: yay for my garden! (more…)
Odds and ends: rice, snobbery, and procrastination. 6 February 2008 11:57 am
Posted by Tracy in : anthropology, cooking, food snobbery, friends, pictures, politics, recipes, school, soup , add a commentIntrigued by a comment from Liz on my curried pea soup recipe, I made a version with 2 cups of brown rice instead of potatoes last Saturday. Results: as Liz also mentioned in her comment, I had to cook it for a lot longer to get the rice done (for once the peas weren’t the slow part of the cooking process) and then it turned my blending equipment was no match for the task of getting the soup all nice and smooth. Dangit! The soup is still tasty, don’t get me wrong, but as far as I’m concerned the texture leaves something to be desired. Something smooth and creamy, like blended potatoes. Gah. I’m such a snob sometimes.
But speaking of rice, if you haven’t seen Free Rice already, it’s a fun game for a good cause, and an excellent procrastination tool (sort of like updating a food blog when I’m supposed to be finishing today’s assigned readings for my anthropology class, but I digress.) (more…)
Eek! Missed a day! 11 July 2007 10:40 pm
Posted by Tracy in : Morning Glory, books, food snobbery, identity, movies, reviews, seasonality, vegan, vegetarian , add a commentI completely forgot to write anything for TracyFood yesterday because of the record-breaking heat which made me fall asleep at 7 PM because there was literally nothing else I could do. Really. That’s what I get for going home too early (i.e. at the very hottest part of the day) instead of staying at Peter’s nice air-conditioned office at the U of O (more…)
Death to the kiddie menu! 6 June 2007 12:11 am
Posted by Tracy in : Marion Nestle, Morning Glory, books, cooking, eating, food snobbery, news, restaurants, work , 4 commentsI’m not kidding. After careful consideration and rereading of certain choice sections of the completely fantastic What to Eat by Marion Nestle, as well as a recent New York Times article on the subject called Don’t Point That Menu at My Child, Please (thanks Mom!), I have come to the conclusion that restaurants everywhere would be performing an enormous public service by destroying their special kid food menus and adding more small dishes (appetizers, sides, and half-portions) to their offerings — and not just because most menus feature a dire lack of portion sizes other than “freaking huge,” although that last is a problem, too.
