A Thank You Thursday recipe 12 January 2012 8:12 pm

Today I would like to thank my brother Piett for digging up the booklet of recipes that came with the Cuisinart ice cream machine which we recently passed on to him after replacing it with a KitchenAid attachment (yay more shelf space and a corrollary thank-you to our parents for both those gadgets, whee!) The recipes that came with the new toy look good, but kinda fancy: egg yolks and cookery and whatnot. None of them have quite the exquisite simplicity of the concoction which this post immortalizes for availability when and wherever I have intertweetplusface access, yay! Also, because this would hardly feel like a proper blog post without a bit of linkage, here’s what the New York Times food section had to say about eggless ice creams a year and a half ago (hint: good stuff, and I should try that berry recipe some time!) Ok, enough introduction, on with the treats! (more…)

Happy Buy Nothing Day!

I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was to avoid making comments on Wednesday’s pictures, readers. If any of you clicked through to Flickr for larger versions (uh, correction, saw hover text from Flickr, since I didn’t quite have the technical ability: see below), you may have noticed a touch of verbosity in the captions there… Yup, those would be my efforts to channel away all the text I couldn’t use on a Wordless Wednesday. ANYWAY. In case you haven’t seen enough turducken to last you a year or more (believe it or not, this was Peter and my third such effort), and you didn’t eat so much yesterday that you don’t want to look at food till Sunday or so, eventually this post will be filled with more pictures of the ghosts of Thanksgiving two years past. For now, however, I am still at my brother’s place in Vermont, where neither Internet nor phone coverage are quite reliable enough to post much, so for now I will leave you with some teaser placeholder pics:

My super-awesome 32nd birthday, let me show you it!

Firstly, you may have heard about the hurricane that was due in town that day? I know, it ended up getting downgraded to a tropical storm, but I think on the whole New York City did a good job of responding to this weather event, unlike during Snowpocalypse 2010 (Snowmageddon? I don’t remember what it was called). In any case, the impending storm doom that ended up flooding Vermont (?!) precluded a party, since everybody was supposed to be staying indoors all day (even if it did end up clear and actually kind of lovely). Meanwhile, there was the problem of avoiding caffeine withdrawal headaches in the event of power outages….

Cold-brew coffee to the rescue!

Cold brew means the wrath of Irene cannot keep me from my precious caffeine (ack! that rhymed but does not scan. dangit!)
Yay cold brew! Also yay nifty double-walled glasses Peter got for his birthday (thanks Lois!)

If I had known how fun and easy cold-brewing coffee is, I would have started doing it years ago, so it’s probably a good thing I didn’t find out until last month because my caffeine addiction is bad enough already, thanks. Anyway, (more…)

…I married him.

Gay people can, and Tracy and I did!
Photo by the kindness of a stranger and Peter’s iPhone. In case you don’t click through for the caption on Flickr, here it is:

Gay people can, and Tracy and I did!

On pi approximation day 2011 around 4pm, Tracy and I got married at the city clerk’s office in downtown Manhattan. At T+16 hours, we told our families. At T+40 hours, we went to cheer for all the people getting married who previously could not.

And now for some teachable moments! (more…)

This week’s Thank You is to Virgin Atlantic, for providing so many wonderful distractions during my sad trip early last month. When I rule the world, transportation to and from funerals will always be ridiculously luxurious, oh yes. In the meantime, I can be glad I got to enjoy the awesomeness in at least one direction. It started in the Upper Class Clubhouse at Newark Airport. You may remember my very dazed brother from the original “guess where I am?” post, and I have him to thank for finally getting a picture of me that showcased our swank surroundings:

Fancy!
I’m so fancy! I read The New Yorker!

Not pictured: the buffet. Or getting fast-tracked through security minutes before they started boarding, because why should the fancy, fancy likes of us have to spend more time than absolutely necessary among the little people? Tee-hee. Anyway, once aboard the plane, (more…)
