Recipe: Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Fried Rice) 14 June 2011 10:15 am

No fried egg? And the only dead animal is shrimp? Not good enough. But now I am craving it. Could you get your recipe to me somehow? That would be really, really awesome.” I replied with a link to the Everything2.com version of “my” recipe and confessed that I often cheat the seasoning of nasi with pre-made spice mixes — my favorite brand is Conimex, which the mystery Asian market in Eugene sometimes had, but I really don’t know where to get it otherwise short of next time I go to the grocery store in the Netherlands. (Clearly, I need to do more exploring in Chinatown(s) and beyond.) At the time my excuse for not making a TracyFood post updating the recipe included:
— trapped under an Otis cat
— full of Dinosaur BBQ from celebrating the launch of the update to PlaNYC (check out the section on food, website typos and all, because it’s kind of my baby).
— oh, you know, that whole pesky having-to-graduate thing
But I have pretty well run out of excuses, especially that last one, yay! So here, less than two months late, woohoo, and less than a month late for Allison’s birthday (sorry lady!), is that recipe, updated into TracyFood post form. (more…)
Monkey Monday: Dan and Dan sing about eggs! 17 May 2010 7:01 pm
Posted by Tracy in : consumerism,eating,eggs,funny,monkeys,random,silly,video , add a commentI know, I know, I’m about a million years behind on all the awesomeness the Intergoogletwitfacetubes have to offer, but big thanks to Ze Frank for blogging about Dan and Dan’s Daily Mail song, so I could waste a dryer cycle watching their videos, including this gem, which is going to be stuck in my head for the foreseeable future, not that there’s anything wrong with that:
Yay for fun songs that combine eggs and tea—two of my very favorite things!
Saying goodbye to Eugene. 25 August 2009 7:08 am

It’s still emotionally true, perhaps more so than ever now, and it’s appropriate, since Peter is saying goodbye to Eugene this morning and coming home to New York City, at last, with his shield, not on it. Congratulations, love. See you soon.

My last Saturday in Eugene, Oregon was pretty well perfect, thanks to a chance encounter with some carrot greens. I spotted them in the totebags of a pedestrian on the bike path south of the Lane County fairgrounds. She was on her way home from Saturday Market; Peter and I were riding our tandem to coffee after a morning of blueberry picking with Kevin and Laurel. It was August second, and thanks to those greens, I remembered it was our last chance to go to Saturday Market before our move. So after coffee, pastries, and a stumper of a New York Times crossword puzzle, we said goodbye to Kevin and Laurel. They rode south, and Peter and I went north, to our last Saturday Market for a long time. (more…)
EGGNOGGEDDON 2008! 24 December 2008 11:17 pm
Posted by Tracy in : dessert,eggs,family,food snobbery,geekery,pictures,silly , 5 commentsWe like taste tests here at TracyFood, because science rules. Tonight at Peter’s parents’ house in Saranac Lake, we compared not two, not three, but four different kinds of eggnog:
- Old New England Eggnog, as obtained with the guidance of my so-called little brother Piett in Vermont;
- Hillcrest Dairy Premium Eggnog from Nori’s Village Market here in Saranac Lake (and the only non-alcoholic drink in the bunch);
- Susie Bright’s Eggnog To Die For (based on a recipe in the original Vegetarian Epicure
by Anna Thomas;
- and eggnog according to Jeffrey Morgenthaler’s recipe
You bet we played an awesome game of Fluxx after all that science, yes indeedy!
But back to the science. (more…)
Chakchouka revisited: in pictures. 11 December 2008 7:12 pm
Posted by Tracy in : cooking,eggs,pictures,recipes,vegetarian , add a commentFood photography is not my strong suit. I get into the cooking and then I forget to break out the camera, or I get into the eating and make a big mess before I remember to take pictures, at which point what’s left is completely unphotogenic. I ran into one of these problems when taking pictures of my chakchouka cooking — you’ll probably be able to guess which one it was. If you like your recipes wordy (and if you don’t, I’m terribly sorry that you read my blog), check out the original chakchouka recipe post (long story short is: eggs poached in spicy vegetable stew, yum). Otherwise, read on.
First things first, the prep:
