So. About those cookies. (Hi Cj!) 29 January 2008 7:26 am

My most recent forays into cookieliciousness fall into the latter category: Alton Brown and America’s Test Kitchen both agree that melted butter is the way to chewy cookie goodness, and after the results of my most recent experiments in that field, I am not about to argue.
I used the recipe for chewy chocolate chip cookies in The New Best Recipe, which turns out to be identical to the one in Alton’s “Three Chips for Sister Marsha” episode: there’s an egg to separate, but it’s worth it, oh yes. Then I pondered ATK‘s very specific instructions on how to shape the cookies, and decided to try an experiment:

Same batter, different shaping techniques. What difference does it make?
Vegan MoFo Survey! 12 December 2007 9:05 am

Long story short, it’s a fun list of questions for participants in Isa Chandra’s Vegan MoFo project, a delicious answer to National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo, for those of you who have never succumbed to its temptations). I think the object of the game was for everybody playing along to write a lot about delicious vegan food, but I sort of missed it because I was fresh back from Nepal and there was way too much internet-based excitement to catch up on. Also I’m not vegan. But I still thought this survey was fun. These are my answers from Tuesday evening at around 6 PM, but I’m not posting them until Wednesday morning because I’m a fickle beast like that. (more…)
Chocolate sorbet: recipe and rememberings 9 August 2007 10:28 pm

Well, for a time, I thought it couldn’t be refreshing, because a big part of what makes chocolate so awesome is the fat. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! It’s just a little heavy, say on a hot summer day. But then I learned about chocolate sorbet, and life got just that much more beautiful. Sorbet is awesome year-round, of course, but it’s perhaps the perfect dessert for the hottest days of summer, when it’s too hot for even ice cream (even the vegan kinds). So chocolate sorbet? A big winner all around, I tell you what. And now for a little flashback to my first experience with this fabulous dessert. (more…)
