Thank You Thursday: more flight of fancy. 11 February 2010 11:04 am

When I rule the world, transportation to and from funerals will always be ridiculously luxurious, oh yes. In the meantime, I can be glad I got to enjoy the awesomeness in at least one direction. It started in the Upper Class Clubhouse at Newark Airport. You may remember my very dazed brother from the original “guess where I am?” post, and I have him to thank for finally getting a picture of me that showcased our swank surroundings:

I’m so fancy! I read The New Yorker!
Not pictured: the buffet. Or getting fast-tracked through security minutes before they started boarding, because why should the fancy, fancy likes of us have to spend more time than absolutely necessary among the little people? Tee-hee. Anyway, once aboard the plane, we had rock star seats:

Those seats all the way in the front? Yeah, those were ours.
complete with ridiculous adjustability (Need more lumbar support? Yeah, it can do that) and foot rests for when we didn’t quite want to be folded all the way out into beds yet. On each foot rest (excuse me, “ottoman,”) we found little “sleep pack” goodie bags, some of the contents of which I showed off earlier.
Now what’s that on the ottoman back there? Why that would be the menu of the meal offerings available on our flight. Of course, I perused it with great interest:

And I made funny faces and everything.
Now here’s Piett sitting across from me. Note that he fits comfortably in his seat. You know how just about everyone over the age of 10 has trouble with the seats in coach? Now imagine if you were 6 foot 3 and built kind of like a brick ****house. That’s my brother, and the point is that these seats (excuse me, “suites,”) were amazing.

Also, he is very excited about his new Virgin Atlantic Upper Class socks.
Here I am modeling those socks (and the menu again), and also showing off the Virgin Atlantic Upper Class sleep suit (pajamas! They lend out freaking pajamas!)

That last picture is the only shot I managed to get of a “suite” folded out into bed mode.
I managed to fold out my own seat into bed (there were honest-to-monkeys linens, you guys, and pillows at least three times as big as the dinky little things you have to beg for in coach) but for the most part the flight crew were ninja-quick about stuff like that so we didn’t ever have to make our own beds or tables or anything ourselves. What happened on those tables, speaking of honest-to-monkeys linens, was quite the adventure right there, but one I will save for tomorrow’s post. Next up: a few more pictures of the fancy-seat features, because they were so crazy that I could not stop obsessing about them:

Ok, so that’s the in-flight entertainment system, the cute little cupholder and suite light, the armrest (also in its completely lowered out of the way mode), the fancy seat belt (padded!) and a little justification for why I took so many pictures: when we landed at Heathrow, everything was all messed up by snow and we had to park out in left nowhere, so I had lots of time to go all click-happy while they sorted out stairs to get us off the plane and buses to get us to the terminal. Whee?
I will conclude with more about the views out the rock star seat windows.

Let’s see, that’s NYC at night (the Empire State Building is green), I think Wales, me peering out, and Piett’s amazing view of London.
Tomorrow: the food.
