Monkey Monday: cooking and reading 4 January 2010 3:21 pm

I will begin and end, however, with stuff I’ve cooked recently, because I am so not even a little bit modest about the awesomeness.
Stuff I’ve cooked recently
Check out this fabulous penne alla vodka we made with duck prosciutto (made by a Columbia Greenmarket vendor whose name I cannot remember). So delicious!

Also, I kinda dig the refracted view of Peter’s plate through the glass there.
As always, we worked from the recipe in the November/December 2006 issue of Cook’s Illustrated, substituting prosciutto into the “with pancetta” variation. End result: much fabulosity.
There are many like it, but this one…
…is Michael Natkin’s ode to his cast-iron skillet, which appeared within a day of my leaving low heat under my big cast-iron beast full of chickpea gravy, only to have that hot mess turn out not disastrously at all, because cast iron is just that badass. So you could say that post kinda sorta resonated with me maybe just a bit.
Science rules!
And so does my gradschool-mate Christy’s post about baking chemistry and some very tasty-looking scones.
More random
Here’s a fun comic about how to make farmers’ markets even more awesome, an article about social (class) inequality and the sustainable food movement (kind of even more so than usual a pet issue of mine after last semester), summarized here by Ethicurean and also by Change.org’s Sustainable Food pages, which I recently discovered via my grad school-mate Shanti (because I totally needed more reading I couldn’t keep up on, whee!) Oh, and in other news I got email from the New York Public Library on New Year’s Eve that they have a copy of Vegan Brunch on hold for me, so I better get to picking that up. Woo!
TAINT NATURAL TAINT RIGHT
(Click here if you don’t know why that heading is funny.)
Finally, here’s Chicago-style deep dish pizza from a recipe in the most recent issue of Cook’s Illustrated (January/February 2010):
I took a few pictures of the whole pizza-making process but Peter took many more; you can see them here. Final verdict: the crust was indeed buttery, biscuit-y, even a bit flaky, but sauce on top of cheese is weeeeeeeird. Still, yay for baking adventures and two big thumbs up for Sprecher’s Root Beer, which Peter picked up as a fantastic accompaniment to all that pizzaliciousness. Nom nom, and to borrow a phrase from The Fellowship of the Ring (movie version), “It comes in pints!”
