So this belated Thank you Thursday is going up Friday, just like Monday’s monkeys were a bit off-schedule. Speaking of off-schedule, it turns out I can’t crash tonight’s Contemporary Issues class, because Professor Ray’s out of town. So much for my cunning plan. On the upside, I’m back to digging the syllabus for Advanced Topics: Food Sociology, and I have written permission to skip the class which overlaps so strongly with the sustainable agriculture course I took at the University of Oregon. Victory dance! Clearly, this calls for ice cream, or at least the idea thereof (it’s kind of cold and wet out for the real thing).

First of all, a little bit of classic Sesame Street:

Yay! Thanks, YouTube! And thank you, ice cream, for being delicious and making me happy. (more…)

My Food Policy class meets for the first time tonight, and I am super-excited about it. Any class that has Food Politics, Safe Food, and Hungry Planet as required readings just canNOT be all bad.

Already in my book collection.

Also on the class reading list: Sweet Charity and Closing the Food Gap with optional Appetite for Profit and Stuffed and Starved. (more…)

Monkey Monday: Julie & Julia edition. 8 September 2009 2:32 pm

So happy day after Labor Day, readers! My holiday weekend featured a fair amount of baking, which I hope to write about later on this week, as well as tasty dinners both higher end (Aroma) and low (all hail my local Cuban diner! Es muy delicioso!) Also, I finally saw Julie & Julia this holiday weekend, and my brain is still full, so that’s what today’s post is all about.

* * * * *

I’m in full agreement with everyone else loving the hell out of Meryl Streep playing, as Salon reviewer Stephanie Zacharek put it, not Julia Child but “something both more elusive and more truthful… our idea of Julia Child.” Also, mad props to Stanley Tucci for managing to share the screen with, well, a force of nature portraying another force of nature, somehow in such a way that I’m still remembering and appreciating his performance days later. Well played, sir. (more…)

Breadman Ultimate, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Machine 3 September 2009 12:29 pm

So last week I posted a picture of some tomato sandwiches on homemade bread, and realized that there was more to their story. You see, that wasn’t just any homemade bread, but the fruit — I mean, product — of our bread machine, the Breadman Ultimate of this post’s title.

Breadman Ultimate is actually our second bread machine; its predecessor was not just our first bread machine but also the first in a series of appliances we’ve worn out through overuse — which you’ve got to admit is kind of badass awesome. That first bread machine was, no joke, Betty Crocker brand, I believe from a Fry’s Electronics in southern California. It was also the source of some controversy. (more…)

Recipe: French Toast Waffles. 2 September 2009 7:51 pm

So Morning Glory ran French toast waffles as a special back in March 2008, but I didn’t make them at home until last month, and I’m not sure Peter has forgiven my holding out on him for so long. That’s the bad news. The good news is, now the cat is out of the bag, and since this breakfasty treat combines great features of two favorites, I think we’ll be eating it a lot from now on. Behold:

I mean, you’ve got to admit those are pretty gorgeous. (more…)
