Good morning, readers! Today’s random ramblings are mostly about my birthday celebrations this past weekend, but scroll down to the end for a special treat whenever you get bored reading all about me, me, me — a Smithsonian video of Julia Child cooking primordial soup. So awesome. Which reminds me: I still haven’t seen Julie and Julia, because I am an enormous slacker, but the good news is that because I’ve put it off for so long, now I can see it using the cheap movie passes available through NYU. Yay! (So, um, anyone reading this who wants to see Julie and Julia in the NYC area some time in the next few weeks, drop a comment or an email, eh?) And now, on to my birthday weekend, with an emphasis on its most delicious aspects. (more…)

If you made it through all nigh-1500 words of yesterday’s post, thank you and congratulations. (Everybody else, go ahead and just scroll through to the end to see what I’m writing about today.) Remember that dinner I mentioned in the last paragraph? Okay, I mentioned a lot of meals there, but only one of them made it into pictures:

A nice quiet Sunday dinner.
“…the cherry tomatoes lasted until Sunday’s light supper of raw veggies, cheese, and crackers.”

Aren’t those tomatoes gorgeous? Their color (more…)

Saying goodbye to Eugene. 25 August 2009 7:08 am

I wrote this piece for an assignment on personal essays and memoir in my food writing class last fall, and it isn’t exactly true anymore — I have had a few more last Saturdays in Eugene since the one described here. It’s still emotionally true, perhaps more so than ever now, and it’s appropriate, since Peter is saying goodbye to Eugene this morning and coming home to New York City, at last, with his shield, not on it. Congratulations, love. See you soon.

My last Saturday in Eugene, Oregon was pretty well perfect, thanks to a chance encounter with some carrot greens. I spotted them in the totebags of a pedestrian on the bike path south of the Lane County fairgrounds. She was on her way home from Saturday Market; Peter and I were riding our tandem to coffee after a morning of blueberry picking with Kevin and Laurel. It was August second, and thanks to those greens, I remembered it was our last chance to go to Saturday Market before our move. So after coffee, pastries, and a stumper of a New York Times crossword puzzle, we said goodbye to Kevin and Laurel. They rode south, and Peter and I went north, to our last Saturday Market for a long time. (more…)

So I haven’t been blogging very consistently these past few months (to put it mildly), but I think I’ve come up with a bit of a solution: more picture posts! This solves both the “not blogging much” problem by also solving the “enormously behind on writing about all the food pictures I’ve taken in, well, a long time” and the “must strain to write more than a paragraph on the same subject” problems. Brilliant! Or so I hope. Anyway. Here’s a few TracyFood-worthy odds and ends from my recent readings.

First, it’s been awhile since I’ve given props to Isa “The PPK” Chandra, but her most recent post was super-awesome for writing and cooking inspiration both. I mean, c’mon. Tempeh Helper: Just Like Mom Used To Never Make? Brilliant. Also, her chickpea-noodle soup was pretty much the best thing ever while I was rocking a gnarly cold this weekend. So yay Isa! Here is a picture of a recent meal I made from your awesome book Vegan with a Vengeance, which I shamelessly plug every chance I get:

Jerk seitan with coconut rice and garlicky collard greens.

Want to do something awesome today? Then come on up to Harlem Day, the epic street fair currently rocking West 135th Street from St. Nicholas Street on eastwards (that would be the 135th street B/C stop, by the way). It runs until 7 PM tonight, and at sunset there’s a free screening of The Wiz in St. Nicholas Park (West 135th and St. Nicholas), preceded by live music, all courtesy of the fine folks at ImageNation. Can you say “best audience ever?” I knew you could! Anyway. Come one, come all! It’s going to be awesome! (more…)
