Monkey Monday: I’m feeling lucky. 25 May 2009 1:40 pm
Posted by Tracy in : books, cooking, friends, fun, good news, monkeys, not even vegetarian, random, vegan, vegetarian , trackbackSo I have an announcement. It turns out May 2009 is Tracy Wins Cookbooks From The Internet Month. Not that I’m complaining or anything, oh no, far from it. Here’s what happened:
Last Sunday I got email from Culinate informing me that I’d won their drawing for a copy of Jim Tarantino’s Marinades, Rubs, Brines, Cures, and Glazes. It was a pleasant surprise, since I couldn’t remember entering the contest! (In case you didn’t know, Culinate’s Cookbook Fridays are well worth checking out, if only for the eclectic sample recipes.) I Twittered (Tweeted? Twatted?) about my pleasant surprise, and the collective voice of the Internet (and Peter, over instant messages from Oregon) talked me into taking the book, even though it felt a bit like cheating.
I confessed my confusion when I emailed Culinate my address to claim the prize, and it turns out my winning entry was carried over from the previous Cookbook Friday drawing, for Mark Miller’s Tacos (Pesto tacos? Of course I was intrigued.) So yep, I got super-lucky. Big thanks to Culinate and Ten Speed Press, for sponsoring a month of great giveaways.
But. One random victory does not a trend make! I need at least three anecdotes, or failing that, two and a lot of determination… well, I’ve definitely got two cookbook-winning stories, anyway. Here’s the second:
Later that lucky Sunday, Megan alerted me and all her other Twitter buddies to Cathy’s Vegan Brunch competition, a drawing for a copy of Isa Chandra‘s latest book, which I have no doubt is a masterpiece on a par with her fabulous Vegan with a Vengeance. Since the contest was technically open to UK entrants only, Megan told me I could use her address, which is handy, since I won! Yay! So I emailed Cathy to explain the situation, asking her to send the book to Megan first, since that’s compatible with the contest rules and shares the victory with the friend responsible for my entering the contest in the first place. Yay again! As I wrote Cathy, I look forward to blogging about the deliciousness that ensues when Vegan Brunch makes its eventual way into my kitchen. Yay yet again!
In the meantime, Marinades, Rubs, Brines, Cures, and Glazes arrived on Saturday and although many of its recipes are not even vegetarian and/or require a grill (appropriate for Memorial Day weekend, but not so much my NYC apartment life) I am nonetheless intrigued. Especially by the prospect of Philly cheese steak-style portobello sammiches. Nom nom nom, I tell you what. Three cheers for cookbooks, friends, and the Internet! Hip, hip, hurray! And so forth.
