Monkey Monday: nothing says short attention span like pictures! 16 February 2009 5:55 pm

I can’t seem to concentrate long enough to write more than a paragraph today, readers. At first I thought it was the cuteness of the cats snuggled up on either side of me:

The kitties saved me a seat!

but that excuse couldn’t last forever, and my writing did not improve when the purring distractions went away. The good news is, I had a lot of pretty TracyFood pictures on my camera, and writing captions is fun and easy. First up is sticky toffee pudding:

Report: “Room to Grow” mini-conference at NYU, 4 February 2009 10 February 2009 1:31 pm

As you probably guessed from the title of this post, on Wednesday 4 February 2009, I attended the “Room to Grow: Envisioning Urban Agriculture at NYU” mini-conference. It was a great way of getting up to speed on gardening efforts around campus, and inspiring pictures of city farms and gardens always do a Tracy good. Plus I got to plant kale in a nifty newspaper pot (you can bet I snagged an extra to dissect, in the hopes that I can learn the relevant origami), hang out with other NYU gardening geeks, and there was tasty food, much of it locally grown. All told, it was a fabulous evening. (more…)

Monkey Monday: vitamin C, English muffins, and soup 9 February 2009 11:50 am

It’s a tea for health Monday here at the Moon Monkey Bar, Grille, and Cocktail Lounge: I woke up dehydrated, sniffly, and with just a hint of a sore throat, so clearly, it’s time to invoke the placebo effect. Echinacea tea and chewable vitamin C for the win! Which is appropriate, since I’m going to be writing about vitamin C for my food studies nutrition class this term. (Working title of that report: “Apologies to Linus Pauling,” not that I’m intimidated or anything.) More on that in a bit. Also, thoughts on English muffins and my mom’s annual soup party (unrelated). (more…)

Tea for Tuesday: three with Allison. 3 February 2009 12:59 pm

So. Long ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and Allison lived at the House of Infinite Monkeys in Eugene (and some time before then, too), we used to go out to tea at a little place called Savouré in Eugene. For a while it was a near-weekly ritual, but then the prices went up and we cut back to twice, and eventually once a month. (Later, Savouré moved to a new location, with only a retail area, so we couldn’t go out to tea there any more — very sad.) But. In its glory days (yes, I think Bruce Springsteen won the Superbowl, and you’d better not have a problem with that), full tea at Savouré involved one of those fabulous three-tiered presentations of sweets (petit fours, among others), savories (tiny sandwiches, natch), and in between, scones with clotted cream and jam. Similar setups were available at two of the tea places we visited last week, and now I sort of wish I’d tried them, which is pretty high praise for a tea place. Anyway. Here’s quick reviews of where we went, before I forget. (more…)

Monkey Monday: I’m back! 2 February 2009 2:29 pm

As previously mentioned, I had a fabulous time with Allison last week. We had tea almost every day of her visit, and I am looking forward to writing about those tea places. Other memorable TracyFood-type highlights of hanging out with Allison in my new city included finally trying that local Italian place, and revisiting a yummy deli, this time for brunch, and the local Cuban diner. Our fridge is still piled high with the leftovers from that last, but Peter finished my mofongo con queso yesterday. (My willing- nay, eagerness to eat just about anything involving plantains continues unabated.)

In other news, I’ve been doing a 24-hour diet record for my nutrition class for about… 32 hours now, and it’s reminding me why I focus my food obsession on deliciousness über alles — the other stuff makes it way too easy to get obsessive-compulsive. (more…)
