A few upcoming food adventures 24 February 2009 8:12 am

Here’s some fun food geeky stuff going on in my not-too-distant future:

Today at 3:15 PM I’m going to a free talk at the New York Public Library’s Humanities and Social Sciences branch by the very promising title of “Cooked Books”. Learn more about where and how to do food research in New York City? Don’t mind if I do!

Some time before Thursday evening, I have to spend about two hours doing qualitative ethnography-style fieldwork on a supermarket, then write all about my it. If I’m feeling really brave, I may attempt participant observation in the Trader Joe’s at Union Square. But I’ll have to wake up pretty early in the morning to pull that off… it gets crazy crowded in there.

Every Wednesday, as I mentioned yesterday, I have standing dinner plans at Greg’s place… and I think this week I’m even off the cooking hook (unless I can be helpful in some way, natch).

Then on Friday afternoon, there’s a food studies brown bag lunch and discussion of a geeky paper about the evolution of culinary taste (how the definition of gourmet food expanded beyond French haute cuisine, stuff like that). I am so excited about this that I may bring cookies or something.

Finally, on Friday night there’s the Chefs and their Publics panel discussion, sponsored by the Institute for Public Knowledge and now at a larger location because so many people RSVP’d for the event. Awesome.

And that’s just this week. It should be a good one!
