Monkey Monday: good and bad news edition. 23 February 2009 11:53 pm

Good news: I’m actually getting around to writing my Monkey Monday post… on Monday, for a change.

Bad news: I still have the attention span of a small flightless bird.

Good news: my favorite crackers, Red Oval Stoned Wheat Thins, now come in a whole-grain version. Since I generally prefer whole wheat bread to white, I said: yay!

Bad news: the whole-grain version isn’t very good. Also, how did I never notice before that Stoned Wheat Thins are made by Kraft — I mean, Altria — I mean, that’s just another name for Philip “evil Big Tobacco” Morris. Dang. Time to research new vehicles for cheese.

Good news: Speaking of cheese, after months of testing I think I’ve come to a conclusion about the various cheddars on offer at my friendly local Fairway, with Cabot’s extra-sharp as my favorite, followed by the Canadian sharp, followed by the New Zealand sharp.

Bad news: the Cabot and Canadian cheddars are both more expensive than the New Zealand cheese. Dangit! (At least the Cabot is usually cheaper than the Canadian cheddar, and it comes in nice big blocks. Which I suppose counts as good news, or at least makes this bad news less problematic.)

Good news: The Dead Milkmen song “Nutrition” really helps me get my class reading done.

Bad news: I still didn’t finish all my nutrition readings done this week, and Walter Willett is still a crazy fat-hater who believes his own hype. (In class today Dr. Nestle was more politic, saying he believes his own data, but now that I’ve filled out a food frequency questionnaire of my very own, I’m pretty sure those are really best suited to measuring wishful thinking.) Moving on…

Good news: When I started making plans to move to New York, I told my friend Greg that I was going to take over his apartment for dinner parties. We started putting that plan into effect this year, and so far we’ve had a hugely successful six-week run.

Bad news: Last Wednesday I was totally not feeling the dinner party, and we were all kinds of last-minute and half-assed in our planning, and then the weather was for laying down and avoiding instead of going to the Greenmarket, whine whine whine.

Good news: Greg talked me (and my trusty copy of Madhur Jaffrey’s Indian Cooking out into the wind and rain and wind, and down to his place, and to make a long story short here’s what I ended up making for dinner:

Indian feast at Greg's, 18 February 2009

It was pretty freaking great, if I do say so myself, and I may have to write a full post describing that picture to get my smug on more fully. But now that there’s less than 10 minutes left of Monday, I’m going to hurry up and post this… technically on time! Woo!

Thanks for the nice words about our cheese! We love that!

The photo of your dinner looks amazing. I can almost smell it through the computer! I’ll be checking back for that recipe.

    Happy Tuesday (now!)

I seriously cannot wait to come back to NYC to have Greg & Tracy dinners on Wednesdays. Maybe we’ll even re-instate Friday night dinners too, which I miss in a pining-after-lost-love kind of a way. Although now they seem kind of trendy – I keep reading in crappy free London newspapers and other equally annoyingly hipster (Nothing wrong with hipster, just annoying hipster) places about “bring whoever and whatever” dinner parties. Grrr.
