Monkey Monday: I’m back! 2 February 2009 2:29 pm
Posted by Tracy in : books, friends, geekery, monkeys, pictures, potatoes, reading, school , trackbackAs previously mentioned, I had a fabulous time with Allison last week. We had tea almost every day of her visit, and I am looking forward to writing about those tea places. Other memorable TracyFood-type highlights of hanging out with Allison in my new city included finally trying that local Italian place, and revisiting a yummy deli, this time for brunch, and the local Cuban diner. Our fridge is still piled high with the leftovers from that last, but Peter finished my mofongo con queso yesterday. (My willing- nay, eagerness to eat just about anything involving plantains continues unabated.)

In other news, I’ve been doing a 24-hour diet record for my nutrition class for about… 32 hours now, and it’s reminding me why I focus my food obsession on deliciousness über alles — the other stuff makes it way too easy to get obsessive-compulsive. I’m making food choices based on whether they’re easily quantifiable, yet also more or less something I might eat on a typical day (haven’t had one of those in about a week, what with wanting to show off NYC dining options to our guests and all). Conclusion: anybody claiming to have good data about what people actually eat is either lying or way less rigorous in their measurements than I want to be in mine. Also, as always, writing down everything I eat makes me way self-conscious (but that won’t stop me from posting the data from this experiment online for all youse guys to read).

Also: I managed to finish this week’s 23-page selection from Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy while just barely not foaming at the mouth. I don’t usually write in books, but for this one I’m making an exception, since my usual strategy of “pause, bookmark, take notes and make comments” was becoming super time-consuming. I read, rant, rave, repeat…. and today I got through by fortifying myself with a delicious lunch:
That’s garlicky collard greens with shallot mashed potatoes, and it was gooooood, even if I have no good way of figuring out how much of the 270 grams of mash was potato, half-and-half, or shallot fried in butter. And on that note, I think I’ll have a slice of banana bread, which I can weigh, for all the good it will do at helping me figure out how much I ate of its component parts.

Finally, coming up later this week on TracyFood: tea party venue reviews, 24-hour diet log details, notes on Wednesday’s Room To Grow NYU gardening mini-conference, and ruminations on fruity shampoo and delayed gratification (I promise, that last is about food).
