On Saturday, 20 January 2008, Peter and I took the Amtrak Ethan Allen up to the end of the line in Rutland, VT, to visit my brother Piett. The kitties did their best to keep us home with their cuteness:

Bye, Otis cat! Bye, Iggy Pop!

but we managed to escape. We got into the Land of Opportunity on Saturday night, had pizza and beer before bed (how can sitting still on a train be so fricken tiring?), then a nice lazy Sunday that concluded with dinner at Little Harry’s, where I enjoyed the hell out of the striped bass in green curry sauce with lots of vegetables. Also, Switchback Ale? Good stuff. And the best TracyFood story of this trip to Vermont is also beer-related: on Monday, December 22 we visited Long Trail Brewery, in Bridgewater Commons.

First, we went on the self-guided brewery tour, and admired all the shiny beer-making equipment:

Later, we got to see some of the machines in action, but only for their end-of-the day soaping-off. It was still pretty cool (sudsy and splattery!)

Mmmm, beer.

Then we headed down to the bar and got a beer sampler apiece, and carefully, scientifically evaluated our opinions (over nachos and fries, so we wouldn’t have the immediate “thish is delishush!” response):

Beer tasting.

Tasting results

Science rules. Peter was in charge of tabulating and tallying the results, and our resounding winner was the limited release Winter White beer, so we picked up a case of that on our way out (two six-packs made their way to Saranac Lake, where their contents were met by another enthusiastic response). The rest of the rankings went like so: Hibernator, Long Trail, and Double Bag strong ale almost formed a three-way tie for second; the next tier was comprised of the Blackbeary Wheat beer (which Peter could not stand), and last was a tie between Hefeweizen and IPA, both of which I found undrinkable. I think we’d have very different results tasting these beers in the summer… and find myself plotting a possible bike-powered Vermont brewery tour adventure. Yum!
