Ask TracyFood: food and chemotherapy? Answer: Chris knows! 16 December 2008 2:28 pm
Posted by Tracy in : advice, eating, friends, guest post, health, interviews, nutrition , 2 commentsSo a month ago, my friend Ed Parker wrote me a question:
Hello Tracy,
I have a friend whose father suffers from lack of appetite due to chemotherapy. I’m trying to get some menus together for him and wondering if you know of any websites or information reference to food and chemotherapy….
Thanks,
Eddie
While I don’t know a lot about nutrition, I probably know even less about cancer and chemotherapy. However, one of the greatest things I keep learning as I get older is that I don’t need to know everything — I just need to know how to ask people who know stuff I don’t. So, enter the guest post!
My friend Christine does know a thing or two about cancer and chemo both, so after reading Eddie’s message, I wrote some email, asked a bunch of questions, and got more answer than I can fit in one TracyFood entry. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be posting her wisdom in a few installments, and thinking of more questions to ask, in case it turns out we’re serious about writing a book like we keep talking about over instant messages. Here we go… (more…)

Colorful! I used the recipe from Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home on leftovers from another recipe in that same book, Coconut Basmati Rice, which I hadn’t made for awhile even though it was a big favorite of ours a few years ago. (more…)

Chakchouka revisited: in pictures. 11 December 2008 7:12 pm
Posted by Tracy in : cooking, eggs, pictures, recipes, vegetarian , add a commentFood photography is not my strong suit. I get into the cooking and then I forget to break out the camera, or I get into the eating and make a big mess before I remember to take pictures, at which point what’s left is completely unphotogenic. I ran into one of these problems when taking pictures of my chakchouka cooking — you’ll probably be able to guess which one it was. If you like your recipes wordy (and if you don’t, I’m terribly sorry that you read my blog), check out the original chakchouka recipe post (long story short is: eggs poached in spicy vegetable stew, yum). Otherwise, read on.
First things first, the prep:
Recipe: Heretical Pasta alla Carbonara 10 December 2008 9:36 am
Posted by Tracy in : cheese, cooking, eggs, pasta, recipes, vegetarian , 1 comment so farWhen I originally posted this recipe to Everything2.com, it provoked at least one recipe response, outraged in tone, denouncing the blasphemers (all caps) and “vegestine” who dare to create a meatless version of this dish. Seriously. What? I mean, whatever. Today what stands out to me about the post in question is that I wrote my entry almost five years ago. Dang. Back then, I was inspired by hunger and the linguine carbonara recipe in Quick From Scratch Pasta by Food & Wine Books. Today, I share a slightly updated version of that recipe, still meatless and fabulous. (more…)
