Posted by Tracy in : dessert,eggs,family,food snobbery,geekery,pictures,silly , 5 commentsWe like taste tests here at TracyFood, because science rules. Tonight at Peter’s parents’ house in Saranac Lake, we compared not two, not three, but four different kinds of eggnog:
- Old New England Eggnog, as obtained with the guidance of my so-called little brother Piett in Vermont;
- Hillcrest Dairy Premium Eggnog from Nori’s Village Market here in Saranac Lake (and the only non-alcoholic drink in the bunch);
- Susie Bright’s Eggnog To Die For (based on a recipe in the original Vegetarian Epicure
by Anna Thomas;
- and eggnog according to Jeffrey Morgenthaler’s recipe
You bet we played an awesome game of Fluxx

Today’s post is super-late because I’ve been out and about winter breaking it up — first with my brother in Rutland, Vermont (brewery tasting report coming up soon!) and now at Peter’s parents’ house in Saranac Lake, NY. I’ve got some catching up to do. Lots of reading, for instance, like:
Marcella Hazan’s “No Chefs in My Kitchen” from the 29 November New York Times editorial page. Her point? Stop calling everyone who cooks well a chef. There’s nothing wrong with being a great home cook. I agree. (more…)

Earlier this month I wrote about some fundraisers for Mark Zolun of Iraila Mediterranean Rustica, who has cancer and no health insurance (someday, I will live in a 21st century first world country that does more than pay lip service to its small business owners, but today is not that day). While there’s still a chance I might make it to one of the events in Eugene, in the meantime my mom and I cooked up a scheme to have a little benefit dinner of our own at my parents’ house in Westfield, NJ. The menu: ricotta gnocchi in hazelnut brown butter sauce, with two different kinds of roasted vegetables on the side.
I was going to attempt babas au rhum for dessert, but last-minute sanity (and a shortage of flour) prevailed. Besides, I was already tempting fate by imitating one of Iraila’s signature dishes — two would just have been pushing my luck too far. (more…)
