Monkey Monday: no surprises here. 24 November 2008 12:28 pm
Posted by Tracy in : books, cooking, eggs, monkeys, random, recipes , trackbackSo I saw the following instructions online in a few places this morning:
Grab the book nearest you. Right now.
Turn to page 56.
Find the fifth sentence.
Post that sentence along with these instructions.
Don’t dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.
…and it had been awhile since I’d played along with an Internet chain letter, and so here’s what I got.
In a saucepan, warm the salsa, tomatoes, and cilantro until hot but not simmering.
Yep, that’s from Moosewood Restaurant New Classics. The huevos rancheros recipe, to be exact, which I’ve never made, mostly because if I’m going to make rancheros from a recipe, it’s the one from the January 2006 issue of Cook’s Illustrated.

In other news of what’s caught my attention online lately, there has to be a better use for false memory-induced food aversions than weight loss dieting. I mean, really. Also, for the sake of food workers everywhere, I feel obligated to point out that people are plenty picky-ridiculous enough without being brainwashed into believing that they hate food because eating disorders are more socially acceptable than body acceptance… gah. On to happier topics.

I sort of desperately want a dinner co-op like the one in this Culinate article, except without the delivery part. Instead, I envision a regular schedule of dinners hosted at different people’s apartments, and people can offer to help cook if needed, or otherwise bring drinks or do dishes afterwards. Entertainment (games, movie, TV) are admired but not required.

Stupendous badass Arjuna Greist would like to remind you that there’s plenty of good reasons to skip eating dead bird on Thanksgiving without being a jerk about it. In particular, focus on the positive: all the delicious things you might eat instead (lots of people like the side dishes better than the turkey, go from there!)

While we’re on the topic of eating the awesome instead of talking trash about “bad” foods (no matter the reason for that condemnation), here’s a lovely post by Jay at The Linkery about The Joy of Real Food. Am I more than a month behind the curve in praising it? Yes, but y’know what? Good reading, like good eating, is always good, not just at the moment you notice it’s feeding you, body and soul.

Speaking of joyful food, there’s a new book out all about bagels. I haven’t read it — heck, I haven’t even finished Slate’s review, here, but the very idea of a book on the history of bagels makes me happy.
