Monkey Monday turns into a belated Paul Newman appreciation. 6 October 2008 9:15 pm
Posted by Tracy in : geekery, monkeys, news, vegetarian , trackbackHey, so I’m not dead in a ditch, but I don’t have access to an unsecured wireless network at home anymore. Instead I can only get online at school, and wouldn’t you know, I have a tendency to do homework there. But! In my various and sundry online readings (some homework-related, others not), I found out that October 1 is World Vegetarian Day, which kicks off World Vegetarian Month. So all the news about scary mystery meat was a perfect lead-in to that. Then right after I finished my post, Umbra had some more advice about eating less meat over at Grist. Sweet!
In other news, I’m now required to read the New York Times food section, “Dining In,” every Wednesday, for class. No slacking off allowed! (Finally getting around to writing about it, that I can apparently slack off on for days.) This past week featured an article about using rice cookers to make more than just rice, a practice I strongly endorse. It also had a little feature about using a food mill to share grownup food with children too young to chew and swallow consistently — again, TracyFood at its death to the kids menu! finest. Also on the front page: an homage to the late Paul Newman, whose snack foods raised millions for charity, and through the machinations of his daughter, Nell, introduced many consumers to organic food, for better or worse. (I’m a little ambivalent about Newman’s Organics, because junk food made with organic ingredients is still junk, but on the other hand if it teaches people that organic food can be just as tasty as conventional, if not tastier, then it’s a very good thing indeed.)
But while I’m on the subject of the late great Paul Newman, what got me writing tonight was a recent query to the Association for the Study of Food in Society email list: a writer looking for help locating food-related scenes from the man’s movies. Within seconds, I’d replied: Fifty eggs in fifty minutes!
And wouldn’t you know it, this Friday is World Egg Day. So I’m a little early to that party, and a little late to remembering Mr. Newman, but on the average… I don’t know, but I’ll try to post more than once this week (we should have cable installed on Wednesday, which should help). Good night!

Good night. Sleep well. Thanks for the kind words about one of my heroes.
