Monkey Monday: a little school update. 25 August 2008 8:00 am
Posted by Tracy in : Marion Nestle, fangirl, geekery, good news, school , trackbackSo school starts the first week of September, with orientation type activities the week before that (i.e. starting tomorrow). I’m still trying to figure out the exact details of new grad student fun and games (so far my quest to obtain a student ID have been fruitless) but in the meantime I’ve turned class registration lemons into delicious metaphorical lemonade, I tell you what.
Y’see, what seems like a few lifetimes ago, I signed up for fall semester classes, and got into a very cool-sounding advanced topics food studies class: Food Sociology as taught by none other than Marion Nestle (one of my big reasons for applying to NYU, oh yes). Only then a few weeks after that, the instructor changed to food writer and historian Betty Fussell — a bit of a letdown for my fangirl self, but hey, the class still sounded cool, right? But then two weeks ago I got an email that the class had been cancelled due to the instructor’s health problems. Oof! Everybody join me in thinking good thoughts for her speedy recovery, okay? But meanwhile, I had a new gap to fill in my schedule, and when I went looking for a replacement…
…I found that there was a spot open in Food Writing, a class I would’ve signed up for in the first place if it hadn’t been full at the time! Hurray! So now this fall I’m taking the standard new grad student seminar, plus International Cuisine (a comparative kind of thing) and Food Writing! Which is so perfect I’m a little giddy about it.
And on that note, I had better head off to the aforementioned graduate student orientation program-related activities. Yay first day of school!

Aiiie! Class registration horror! How I do not miss it. Glad it is working more or less in your favor, though.
