Monkey Monday: live from New York! 18 August 2008 12:38 pm

I’m about to take the A train downtown to jump through some bureaucratic hoops at NYU, but I wanted to rave about my yesterday a bit first. Some of the highlights:
- brunch with old friends and new (no bagel with lox or Sunday New York Times, but I’ll be okay)
- Peter’s first subway rat (he’d actually kind of been looking forward to seeing one)
- street vendor soft serve ice cream with chocolate dip
- getting distracted from an expedition to Central Park by the Harlem Week festivities on 135th Street (win!)
- BBQ ribs and mac ‘n cheese and candied yams at the aforementioned street fair (Peter had jerk chicken, which was also amazing, but my food won — see below for pictures)
- eventually making it to Central Park and wandering around eating chocolate, amazed that we were still in the same city as Harlem Week
- real live monkey on some guy’s shoulder at some kind of film/video shoot across the street from the American Museum of Natural History (had to mention that, given the day and all)
- free screening of Letter to the President in St. Nicholas Park (down the street from our apartment!) courtesy of the 2008 ImageNation film festival. Tonight they’re showing Be Kind Rewind at 8 PM, with live music before and after… we’ve got dinner plans for right around then but I hope we can catch some of the festivities anyway.
It was a very good day, I tell you what.
In other news, I have yet to cook anything more complicated than tea in our new apartment, but not because our appliances haven’t been delivered yet, oh no. You see, I packed the rice cooker and most of the ingredients for brown gack, in a fit of being ridiculously overprepared. But we had Chinese takeout for dinner on Saturday, like you do on a first night in a new place, and yesterday’s street food would have been a tough act to follow even if I hadn’t come home still in a food coma:
Om nom nom nom nom, I tell you what. And now I must head out, but I look forward to saying more good things about delicious food in my new home and the great city beyond its walls. Yay!
