Fun facts! 6 August 2008 3:33 pm

I started writing these on Friday, for extra bonus alliteration points, when I discovered that our toaster oven does not work unless it is plugged in (I know, I know, dur-hurrrrr, but in these exciting times I’m not exactly the swiftest). Then I got distracted (no big surprise). Whatever. The toaster oven was unplugged because Peter installed shiny new GFCI outlets in the kitchen, thus satisfying one of the “please repair” requests from THE BUYER OF OUR HOUSE, OMG!

Which leads me to the big fun fact: Um, yeah, I think we’re really selling the house. I have been waiting and waiting to make this announcement because I wanted to post a picture of the house with a “sale pending” sign on it, but y’know what? I turned in escrow documents last Tuesday, and today we signed a big pile of paper, and it’s all surreal as get the heck out, but (fingers crossed, knock on wood and all that obsessive-compulsive superstitious stuff) I think it’s all going to work.

Next: last Monday I discovered that I can get from dead asleep in bed to Morning Glory in under half an hour (bad alarm, failing to wake me!), but I won’t really be using that skill ever again since Wednesday was my last day at work. But while I’m on the subject of work, another fun fact, also from last Monday:

There are still people in this world who will walk out of a restaurant if there’s no meat on the menu. Even in Eugene (although to be fair, these folks were both really old and pretty unmistakably only in town for some kind of conference, and also they were really Southern: “Y’don’t have sausage, or bacon, or nothin’,” one of them told me, by way of explaining why they were leaving without breakfast. Ayup.) People have a lot of trouble reading menus, even when they are posted in restaurant windows before the entrance, which is next to a sign that says “MEAT FREE ZONE.” Sigh.

Back to selling the house and moving and all that excitement: As I mentioned yesterday, we had a party in Eugene last Saturday night, since it was the last weekend we could have people over without having them sit on boxes. Next weekend we’re going to Portland and Corvallis for more quality people time (last-minute sanity says that we’re renting a car and putting the bike in the back, for maximum flexibility and time-saving and not beating ourselves up with 90-plus-mile days). If you’re interested in joining us for any of those festivities and I haven’t already sent you multiple emails and Facebook messages, you know what to do.

Nextly: I suspect I may need my very own copy of Fish Without a Doubt by Rick Moonen and Roy Finamore. I say this because the last time I returned a cookbook overdue to the library after scanning a few recipes for future reference, it was Madhur Jaffrey’s Indian Cooking, which (as regular readers of this blog already know) I love with a love bordering on obsession. Also because Fish Without a Doubt addresses head-on the problem of trying to choose fish that are neither contaminated with heavy metals nor endangered freaking species. That is very much the kind of advice I want with my recipes, oh yes. But we’ll see if I break down and get the book. Today I am trying to work up the courage to pack all my cookbooks and copies of Cooks Illustrated, but it’s HARD (and I am whiny, in case that wasn’t obvious enough). I think it’s fair to bring my handwritten recipe notebook and a copy of my beloved Moosewood New Classics, but it’s a slippery slope from there to The New Best Recipe which kind of weighs a ton. Dangit!

Anyway. Back to packing, at least until I get too hungry to go on. Here goes….

Madhur Jaffrey is a really good cookbook author. Her Quick and Easy Indian Cooking shocked me when I got it a bunch of years ago because it really was a) quick and b) easy, especially once you come to terms with some of the less-common-in-the-US spices. Easy to follow recipes that turn out pretty much as promised, and the text is leavened with a few personal asides that make it fun to read as well. Anyone who likes cooking and Indian food should check out her books!
