Things to read, toys to play with, secrets I’m bursting to tell…

Firstly: Hey! Awesome! Grist has a new column all about food! It’s called Checkout Line and if you dig Tom Philpott’s Victual Reality and wish Ask Umbra would answer more questions about grocery shopping, well, you’re a lot like me, and Checkout Line might be right up your alley, too!

In other awesome news, Peter got a $10 gift certificate from our friendly local hardware store for his birthday, and we were going to spend it on martini glasses but they only had ugly ones (c’mon people, bent stems? ew.) But just one row over in their surprisingly extensive housewares section, they had stovetop espresso makers on sale… surely you see where this is going. Less than $10 later, we had ourselves the beginnings of a beautiful addiction. Peter, here’s an article about how it works!

Let’s see, what else? Oh, right: I baked brioche this weekend and I’m really proud of it! Now here’s hoping I can refrain from eating it all, because I really want to try this fabulous-looking bread pudding recipe. I’m thinking that would be a good vehicle for red currants from my garden.

As for the secrets I’m jut bursting to tell, let’s just say they’re not unrelated to the super short attention spans which have prevented me from posting with any kind of regularity these past weeks, but that I sincerely hope I only have to wait one more day before making a very happy announcement. Think good thoughts for me, y’all!

P.S. I gave in and bought more oatmeal just two days after my last post. Even though we’ve probably got less than a month to go in Eugene, and I should really be working harder to consume rather than restock the contents of our pantry, it was just too weird, going without it.
