Cooking for friends, part X: dal bhaat with Liz, Jason, and Ryan 21 May 2008 6:16 am

So when I made plans to visit Liz and Jason and meet my new favorite two-month-old Ryan, I maybe kinda sorta browbeat them into letting me make them dinner, since that’s how I roll. Then, because I’m kind of a jerk, I asked, “So what do you want for dinner?” Realizing that this was kind of a bad move, I suggested adventure cooking, teaming up on a new recipe, or maybe dal bhaat as a sure thing kind of backup plan. Liz wisely opted for the latter, and a delicious time was had by all.
I got to their place ~4:30 on Monday the 12th, and there was tea and chatting and baby-cuddling before I got a leisurely start on the cooking. Meanwhile, Liz entertained and eventually fed Ryan while also putting together a mixed berry cobbler like some kind of multi-armed ninja goddess. Dude.
We ate at 7:30 or so (I explained a bit about eating on trek, but neglected to gloat about service from the most beautiful man in Nepal):
and yes, that second one is pretty blurry but I think it’s the best shot I got of Ryan’s cuteness. Perhaps I shall use that cuteness as my excuse for forgetting to take a picture of the food, which was dal bhaat (the rice: basmati, presoaked and lightly seasoned with cumin seeds and onions) and cauliflower-pea tarkari. I did not forget to take a picture of dessert, however:
Thanks Liz! I will now tell the entire Internet that you and Jason are so awesome that you wouldn’t even let me do the dishes after dinner, which is to say that I am totally looking forward to making dinner for you again (and it will be ever so much easier when we live on the same coast! Yay!)
