Garden update photos! 6 May 2008 11:09 pm

So last Wednesday I got home from work and was greeted by a happy sight:

Lilacs as seen from the street.

Lilacs! Blooming! Maybe spring is finally here! With these hopeful thoughts in mind, my mind naturally turned towards the garden, and my eyes (and camera) followed:

Looking past the lilacs...

I remember reading somewhere that it’s safe to plant beans when lilac blooms, but um, I’ve got a lot of other stuff to do in my garden before I can plant beans, to put it mildly. Still, here’s a little look at what is going on in my mostly bean-less garden (as always, clicking on pictures will take you to larger versions on Flickr):

Fava beans.

Here’s why I describe the garden as only mostly bean-less:

Favas! I planted these way back in February, and they’ve survived snow and hail and are now so big I feel mostly okay leaving them out without frost fabric. (Yes, I am an extremely overprotective plant momma.)

Although no match for the mighty hugeness of my bucket o’ potato plant, there’s finally some pretty decent plants to show for the spuds I buried outside at the same day I started the indoor experiment (last photographed 26 April):

Potatoes!          More taters!

Perhaps you can see a reason or two I took these pictures in part to prove to myself that I really needed to get weeding? I did get on that project over the weekend, but I suspect I was most motivated by happy sights like these snap peas:

Sugar snap peas!

Yay garden!
