Chock full of randomness! 29 April 2008 7:16 am

You can locate a participating shop here… and there’s one within easy walking distance of my house, aw yeah. (Like, yesterday I got off the bus a few stops early there to do my grocery shopping and carry it home easy walking. Oh yes. Free deliciousness will be mine.)
In other news, looking over at the right hand side of this page, I can’t help but notice the trend of no posts on Thursdays, which suggests that I either have to get better at writing stuff ahead of time and scheduling it to appear on that day, or maybe give myself Thursdays and Fridays off instead of weekends. Website stats for the past few months have pretty consistently shown that fewer people check in on Fridays than on other weekdays anyway, but I’m still not sure I like that option, either. On the other hand, I do really like liveblogging America’s Test Kitchen, even when the episodes are a little disappointing, as was the case last Saturday (boo boring white food and no tasting with Jack!)
In more school-related excitement (in case or because yesterday’s adventures in certified mail weren’t enough), I’m going to be in and around New York City for the week of May 10-16 (arriving so late on the 9th and leaving so early on the 17th that they really don’t count except as travel days). There will be awesomeness aplenty.
Speaking of awesomeness and well, enormous geekery on my part, have I mentioned that I’ve been subscribed to the Association for the Study of Food in Society (ASFS) email list for just over a year now, and love it? I’m of course way behind on reading those emails (have been since the Nepal trip at least) but this week I’ve been catching up, in part because there have been some really fantastic conversations going on there, which keep inspiring me to read more. I’ve been thinking that I might try to summarize some of those discussions on this blog from time to time, especially when they’re as awesome as the recent threads on raw milk (Anne Mendelson’s book on milk comes out in October, yay!), the social class implications of laws requiring restaurants to list nutritional information on menus, and finally, Indian food (especially in U.S. restaurants), which last reminded me of this video:
Help me out, readers: is this funny? Peter tried to show it too me and I couldn’t even watch it the whole way through; my brain kept back-translating the cleverly inverted stereotypes until all I could hear were the very worst restaurant customers imaginable. But I’m tempted to email it to the ASFS list with some kind of comment about culinary tourism and social class, just to see what the fine folks there have to say on the subject.
And finally, in a different but also very geeky vein, my completely random but awesome discovery of the weekend: HowToHardBoilAnEgg.com, via Herbivoraceous. Yum. Now I just have to wonder how I’ve gone all these years without learning that cooling cooked eggs as quickly as possible is the way to avoid that icky green business around the yolk. But hey, now I know. And so do you. Now, don’t forget to enjoy your free frozen treats!
