So a few Monkey Mondays ago, I realized that it was Saint Patrick’s Day during the International Year of the Potato, and set out to celebrate it in my garden (like you do). A quick glance at the information available online about potato cultivation suggested that it’s possible to do so in containers, so I broke out a bucket:

Potatoes in progress!

It’s a five-gallon food-grade plastic bucket which originally contained an unholy quantity of Toby’s bleu cheese dressing delivered to the Sundance deli for the salad bar. We’ve got a big stack of them in the garage, retrieved from the alley by my former place of employment. But I digress. I was sort of skeptical of this project until April 4:

Potatoes coming up!

Yay! Potatoes coming up! And then they really started growing:

They grow up so fast.

That’s just five days later, on April 9. And here’s five days after that, April 14:

No, they really grow up fast. They clear the top of the bucket now!

Totally spanning the bucket and peeking out over the top! So awesome! And so then I figured they were big enough that I could add some more dirt to the bucket and give them a bunch of water in addition to all the coffee pot rinsings they’ve been enjoying all month, and they seem to have liked that okay:

Yay taters!

That latest is from last Saturday and I swear they’ve grown another six inches since then. Go potatoes go! (Now if only it would stop hailing on my outside garden, but that’s a story for a different post, and one which I hope will also have a happy ending.) Stay tuned for more potatoliciousness…

    Greetings
How long did it take for your potatoes in the buckets to produce edible size potatoes?

Did you have to apply anti-fungal spray at all?
    Where do you live?
I live in Durban which is humid.
What species potatoe did you plant.
