Monkey Monday: back to randomness. 14 April 2008 9:40 pm

Did you hear that the only female head waiter at Per Se wrote a book about the experience? From that article, it sounds like it could be fun if you’re into that whole behind-the-scenes-at-restaurants thing. Especially if you’re curious about super-extreme high end fine dining.
But maybe you’re more in the mood for pictures of food that takes the shape of its container (brought to my Google Reader by Dan Boothe — thanks Dan!)
On Friday, CJ did her best not to be offended by this week’s Morning Glory specials menu, what with its tempeh sloppy joes and all, and I started a little essay of sorts in response to her comment (complete with links to articles about cheap steaks as a counter to all my talk of tofu). And then I realized (especially after I was inspired to start yet another such essay by her response to my reply): I write this rantlet a lot, to the point of putting it in the personal statement part of my application to grad school. So I’m thinking about reshaping that into a slightly more generalized essay for these online parts. But um, something I forgot to mention in all the trying to keep it short was: I guess I’m more than a little prejudiced against ground meat, but it’s a learned prejudice from lots of bad experiences, okay? The vast majority of the time, it’s either really scary mystery meat, and if it isn’t really scary mystery meat then I’m usually wondering why good meat was wasted by grinding it up! There’s only a very few exceptions in my data, and many of them are meatballs at Iraila, which is high praise for Mark’s culinary badassitude indeed.
The archives for James Kochalka’s American Elf journal comics go all the way back to 1998 now, and include gems like this little number about bacon poisoning. It’s a real danger, people. Beware! And if you don’t read AE already, go check out the comics for a fantastic mix of adorable and sometimes obscene.
In other news,
literally days after posting I found out about Not Quite Nigella’s Banana Bread Bake-Off my banana bread recipe and of course I got all excited and emailed it in right away. HOWEVER, since I didn’t have a picture to include, I’m thinking about working up a fully illustrated recipe for posting and entering into the contest some time between now and the May 10 deadline. Woo!
And finally, I’ve started trying to plan a trip out to NYC to visit NYU and introduce myself to the department and tour the campus and start scouting out possible places to live. I’ll probably eat a noteworthy thing or two in the process, even if everything else is too uneventful to write about (yeah, right!)

When are you thinking of going out to NYC? I’ll be there the last weekend of May…
You know you’re required to stop in Boulder if you’re road tripping East, right? In fact, please plan on several days for bike riding, food eating, hiking, and general fun.
