Once again, I meant to post the new specials on Friday but I guess I was too busy writing a mushy Open Letter and writing sappy emails and the like. Also later in the day I won the used books lottery at the Smith Family Bookstore by the UO campus, scoring a barely used copy of M.F.K. Fisher’s classic The Art of Eating and a shiny new copy of Keith Knight’s The Passion of the Keef (mere days after my open letter to the man — synchronicity rules!) So that was pretty awesome. Also, yay books!
In other news, my Google Reader mocked my butterscotch-failing pain last night, presenting me with Michael Ruhlman’s post on the subject when all I wanted to do was forget butterscotch even existed. That post and most of the ones it links to made me feel like a complete idiot, like I’d messed up the easiest thing in the world, but hey, I used to suck at scrambled eggs, so it’s not like I can’t ever be taught. And then I read the butterscotch ice cream post on Smitten Kitchen, and felt better knowing that I’m not the only one who’s hosed up this supposedly simple thing. In particular I liked the observation:
…I shouldn’t have followed his suggestions so blindly, I know, but I get into this mode when I’m hanging on a recipe’s every word and I swear, if Step 5 said “walk to window, open it and chuck bowl’s contents out over sidewalk occupants below” it is entirely possible I would do just that, pedestrians be damned.
Seriously, you should go read the whole post, and then you’ll see why I’m going to be all about butterscotch ice cream in the not too distant future. Yay! (And thanks, Deb! And more thanks for the suggestion of what to do with the lefrover egg whites!)
Allrighty then. Coming up later this week, lots of pictures, both from the Nepal trip and because there’s new signs of life in my garden, yay! Also, at least one recipe (remember when I used to do those?) because I’m thinking you all need to know how I make banana bread. Stay tuned!
