Monkey Monday: pop quiz edition 24 March 2008 5:40 pm

Hey readers! Do you know how to handle a melon? Bix at Fanatic cook has some pointers, in light of the recent FDA warning about Salmonella-contaminated cantaloupe from Honduras. In case you’re wondering, I handle melon as little as possible, because the stuff literally makes me gag. Ew. Melon-lovers of the world, relax: that just means there’s more for you, since I’m not gonna eat it. But um, try to find out where your fruit’s coming from to minimize your chances of food poisoning, eh?

But while we’re on the subject of fruit, did you know that watermelons are technically berries? It’s true — they’ve got their seeds all mixed in their flesh, unlike true melons, which are more like sweet squash. Which explains why watermelon is the only kind of melon I’ll eat (especially the delicious little yellow-fleshed ones from our CSA farm, Groundwork Organics, but I digress). Now you know!

Also, guess who finally updated the reading list section of her website? Yeah, that would be me. Someday I’m probably going to give in and add Amazon links to my recommended favorites there, but today is not that day.

More questions, and back to the news: Click here for a little food quiz by the ever-awesome Union of Concerned Scientists! I am happy to report that I got some questions wrong despite my tried-and-true strategy of going with the most depressing answer every time someone asks about politics or current events. So that’s actually pretty darn hopeful! Woo!

Finally, how awesome do this week’s Morning Glory organic specials look?

Morning Glory Specials 24 March 2008

If you answered “I don’t know, Tracy, why haven’t you scanned it yet?” then you’re reading this before Tuesday evening, because I haven’t gotten to picking up a copy of the latest menu yet. If you answered “pretty darn good!” then either you’ve been over there more recently than I have or you’re reading this on Tuesday night (update, 26 March 2008: I mean, Wednesday morning, sorry!) Either way, thanks!
