Monkey Monday: in praise of sharing and other forms of awesomeness. 17 March 2008 5:24 pm

I’ve said it before and will say it again: I’m not even vegetarian and I love the Post-Punk Kitchen. It’s not just because Isa’s Vegan with a Vengeance rocks my world (ask me about my overdue fees), but I do feel compelled to mention that little factoid again and again. No, there are many reasons for my love, but today I think my favorite thing about the PPK is the badass DIY enthusiasm, the “suck it and see” approach to food and cooking, the attitude that a recipe, dish, or meal is a success as long as you enjoy the result. Also, I don’t know if it’s physically possible for me to agree more strongly with Isa’s opinion about recipe sharing, expressed so well below.

I sometimes get frustrated with “vegan secrets.” I’ve written about it a little before and I know it comes across as bisque-y, but the reason behind it is nothing but nice. When you have a great new method for, oh, I don’t know, meringue or frosting or mayo - why not share it? I mean, for free… People will still support you and buy your cookbook, in fact, they might be more apt to buy your cookbook because of recipes they’ve tried from a blog or where ever. My book sales aren’t hurting because the chickpea cutlet recipe is all over the internet.

But besides just increasing book sales, the experience of collaboration can be rewarding… in collaboration there is community, in community there is strength.

Oh, go read the whole post already, you know you want to: On Sausages and Community.

In other news of the PPK-related awesome, all of you who don’t read their blog must go check out Hezbollah Tofu, dedicated to veganizing the recipes of Anthony Bourdain, for spite and farm sanctuary fund-raising. Say it with me now: awwwww. So adorably awesome!

Um, what else? Well, I was going to link to the Herbivoraceous review of the Year’s Best Food Writing series, which made me crave buckwheat crèpes (more on that later), but the site’s down, so for now you’ll have to take my word that it was awesome and finally convinced me that I should check those books out. As to the craving for buckwheat crèpes, all I can say is that I currently have batter based on a Vegan With a Vengeance recipe resting in my fridge. I am very excited about this experiment but also fully prepared to fall back on my non-vegan standard recipe should the need arise, so I’m pretty much guaranteed deliciously awesome results.

Finally, here are Morning Glory’s awesome organic specials for the week:

Morning Glory Organic Specials

I’m torn between the fritatta, the enchiladas and the special soup myself… good thing I have three shifts this week, the better to try all three!

P.S. I just realized that it’s St. Patrick’s Day during the International Year of the Potato. I know what I have to do.

P.P.S. Click here if you don’t understand why the URL in this post is heck of funny. If only I had any need whatsoever for t-shirts.
