Monkey Monday: weekend roundup. 3 March 2008 7:14 pm

Written all weekend, finally posted Wednesday, backdated to Monday for extra confusion! Very quick summary: You (and everyone you know) need(s) a copy of Vegan With a Vengeance, and I have pictures to prove it. TastingMenu had an excellent post about tip-sharing. It’s Jen’s last week at Morning Glory, and she rose above and beyond the occasion with an amazing specials menu. Later this week: yay for my garden!

So. Here I go: I’ve been exploring my library’s copy of Vegan with a Vengeance by the awesome Isa Chandra Moskowitz. How awesome is this cookbook? Well, for starters, I almost ran out of nutritional yeast making its recipes this weekend. Which is saying something, because my usual “buy exactly the right amount from the bulk bins” superpower failed miserably the last time I bought nutritional yeast, and we’ve been overstocked for like a year. But not anymore! So far I’ve made Isa’s seitan recipe:

All hail!

and used its results (almost 3 pounds!) in Chili Sin Carne a MolĂ© (in the pan on the left-hand side of the fridge picture above — also, eek my fridge needs cleaning) and Seitan-Portobello Stroganoff:

Seitan-portobello stroganoff.

Full confession: I didn’t follow the latter recipe to the letter, because I had neither soymilk nor tofu sour cream and I wanted me some real egg noodles, dangit.

Speaking of egg noodles, I had a funny realization in my quest to procure ingredients for the weekend’s cooking adventures — I realized that I do not trust fancy egg noodles. While I’m sort of snobby about most pasta (except Asian noodles, which I still don’t know much about), I want my egg noodles cheap and crappy. I wouldn’t know what to expect from them otherwise!

In other news, that awesome blog post about tip sharing I mentioned before? Here it is, in link form. I posted a comment but I think I got spam filtered for using too many links in my comment text, but here’s what I tried to write:

Wow. I guess I’m naive (and I know I’m lucky in that I’ve always worked in places that tip out to the kitchen) but I canNOT believe there are people dumb and/or vile enough to resent tip-sharing. Seriously. Are these the same people who’ve lost such sight of what they’re getting at a restaurant that they complain about the cost of their meal if it’s something they could make cheaper at home? Dear restaurant customers of the world: If you feel like your server would be getting stiffed by losing a portion of the tip you left, maybe that’s because you didn’t leave enough. Love, Tracy.

P.S. For less bitchy commentary on tip-sharing (and I will now be listing the above post among my favorites in that category), I really like The Linkery’s “About Our No-Tipping Policy” and their Q & A pages on the subject.

Right then! Speaking of the place where I’m lucky to work, here’s Morning Glory’s specials menu for the week:

Morning Glory specials for the week of March 3, 2008.

It occurs to me that I forgot the side of maple syrup every time I sold the crèpes on Monday and Tuesday this week, but I didn’t get any complaints, because oh the awesomeness. Also those huevos rancheros: do not be fooled by the menu description. They are actually made of pure deliciousness. Boy howdy, are we ever going to miss Jen. I only wish I could’ve finished this post in time to advertise her menu a little earlier.

I do enjoy my copy of Vegan with a Vengeance. And, yes, I agree: it should be part of every cookbook library for no other reason than it is fun to read.

And that is all well and noble of certain restaurants to have tip policies like The Linkery has, but…well…I’m not in favor of it. And I think it has lost completely the concept of a gratuity (but, then again, so have most people).
