Monkey Monday: Presidents Day edition. 18 February 2008 11:53 am
Posted by Tracy in : eating, health, monkeys, nepal, news, pictures, travel , 3 commentsYou know what’s startling? When you’re doing the dishes and part of the faucet breaks off in your hand and you get shot in the chest with a big jet of water. And yes, I am speaking from personal experience. This was yesterday morning, and I barely had the presence of mind to turn off the water after yelping my surprise such that Peter came flying in from the other room to my rescue (not that there was anything he could do except say “Whoa” at the broken thing). I spent the next half hour or so sort of blinking and changing out of many soaked layers of clothing. Then we went to the hardware store for a new faucet, because although the old one was under warranty, I didn’t have a receipt or proof of purchase or anything, so alas. (We kept the paperwork for the new one just in case, you betcha.) So today I’m still feeling like an amateur plumbing badass, because while Peter took the old faucet apart, I did most of the installation of the new one, because I fit under the sink better. Yay competence! (more…)
Calling all lentil lovers: help me test a dal bhaat recipe! 15 February 2008 11:53 am
Posted by Tracy in : cooking, friends, nepal, recipes, vegan, vegetarian , 8 commentsHey kids! If you don’t have meal plans for this weekend, allow me to make a suggestion: delicious dal bhaat, Nepali lentils with rice. In particular, I’d love the hell out of it if you tried the recipe in this post and let me know how it turns out. I’ve made a few changes from my first attempt, mostly in the combination of dal used, but I’ve got suggestions about that in case you don’t have (and don’t want to acquire) an extensive collection of dried pulses (which describes my pantry remarkably well, but I digress). So. If you think you might be up for a little weekend adventure cooking, read on! (more…)
Recipe: The LocoMotive’s Portobello Mushrooms in Wine Sauce 14 February 2008 2:31 pm
Posted by Tracy in : cooking, recipes, restaurants, vegan, vegetarian , 5 commentsHappy Societal Expectations Day, everyone! Please follow that link to an excellent Dinosaur Comics about the problem with Valentines Day, but then come back here to read about a dish that’s so sexy-delicious it will drown out the taste of societal expectations 100%, unless you really don’t like mushrooms, in which case I guess the flavor of your hate will do the trick. Also, thank you for leaving more mushrooms for me! But I digress.
As I’ve mentioned before, I loved The LocoMotive Restaurant from the moment I first ate there, and I love its memory still. Their signature dish, portobello mushrooms in wine sauce, was part of the last meal I ate there, on Christmas Eve 2004, just a week before they closed their doors forever. (more…)
Another look at Trader Joe’s. 12 February 2008 11:48 pm
Posted by Tracy in : consumerism, news , 1 comment so farI know, I know, I wrote about looking at TJ’s last week, but I can’t resist. A few hours ago, my mom emailed me this article: US store chain cuts sales of food from China. The very long story short is that Trader Joe’s has announced that they’re going to stop selling some foods from China, in particular “single-ingredient items” like garlic and spinach — by the way, I think I’m in love with the phrase “single ingredient item,” which I spotted in both the LA Times and what the USA Today article about this “Guess what TJ’s is up to now?” story. Yay single-ingredient food items! Yay for a catchy phrase that describes what my grocery shopping is almost all about! But I digress. (more…)

This weekend I spent a fair amount of time exploring TracyFood’s traffic patterns on Google Analytics, and was heartwarmed at the number of familiar sites giving me references. You are all beautiful, wonderful people — if you want me to blogvertise you back, drop me an email or something, mmkay? If you’re just skimming this paragraph to get to the part about the lentils, your not-so-long wait is over. (more…)
