Today’s theme is photographic comfort food.

Thanks, Piett and Jen!

I nearly tripped over a big box of awesome left at the front door last Thursday: Half a gallon of Grade A dark amber maple syrup, courtesy of my brother Piett, his girlfriend Jen, and her dad’s farm in Vermont. Hot damn is that ever good stuff (we had it on waffles for dinner that very night).

The last of the brussels sprouts from the garden.

That’s the very last of the Brussels sprouts cooking Chiara’s dad-style up there, for dinner last Friday. Now all that’s left of last year’s harvest is some frozen tomatoes and lots of seeds, which I can hardly wait to plant. Stupid days not being quite long enough and not having south-facing windows to get the most possible light for seedlings. But speaking of my garden…

My garden is the best ever.

Hooray for my garden! That’s garlic and chives coming up despite it being February. Sure, there’s been signs of daffodils and lilies or whatever since December (what global climate change?) but I didn’t plant those. These alliums are my babies.

Y’know, for years I thought I didn’t like maple syrup. Turns out that’s because the fake stuff is crap. The turning point came when I was making granola one time and realized that I was licking my fingers after measuring the syrup. After that, there was no more lying to myself, and now that I have a source for really good stuff, I’m really looking forward to exploring all the different kinds (we’ve usually got Grade B because it’s Peter’s favorite, and it’s awesome, but yay for branching out, right?)
