Laughter is good Tracy food, and the blog Stuff White People Like makes me laugh. Have you seen it? It’s completely brilliant, as long as you don’t read the comments (don’t say I didn’t warn you). Here are a few samples I picked for their relevance to TracyFood:
#36 Breakfast Places (I swear I’m printing this one out for Morning Glory).
#54 Kitchen Gadgets
That last one, of course, hits especially close to home. (more…)
Winter Squash 103: toasting the seeds. 28 February 2008 12:22 pm
Posted by Tracy in : pictures, ingredients, winter squash, seasonality, vegan, eating, vegetarian, cooking , add a commentFebruary is never my favorite time of year, but it’s especially rough in Oregon, where most of the winter looks like the very worst kind of February weather to me — not super-cold, just grey and dark and rainy. There’s usually a nice week in the middle of the month, when the sun comes out and I get my hopes up that winter is over and I can go back to playing in my garden. That week is almost invariably followed by at least a month of meteorological misery (sometimes it even snows on my poor little sproutlings). Not so this year. It’s been a remarkably sunny February, and I’m a little suspicious, like Oregon is trying to lure me into a false sense of security so it can destroy me with hail. I’ve been trying to resist overconfidence, but March is almost here…
All of which is to say that if I want to write about winter squash, I had better hurry up and do it while there’s still a hint of the appropriate season. So. (more…)
Another quickie: Feng shui McDonalds in L.A. 27 February 2008 8:42 pm
Posted by Tracy in : weird, fast food, consumerism, news, restaurants , add a commentAgain, seriously, this was just too weird not to share: Calif. McDonald’s Tries Feng Shui Theme, via Eating Liberally, whose writer is way more feng shui literate than I will likely ever be. Here’s the part that really made my head spin: (more…)
Quick link: “Is Feminism Compatible With the Kitchen?” 26 February 2008 2:07 pm
Posted by Tracy in : consumerism, politics, feminism, cooking , 2 commentsThat’s seriously the headline on this article about women cooking (or not) that ran on Alternet a week ago. It is still making my head spin, and now I am sharing it (and my bewilderment) with you, dear readers. To be fair, the article mostly doesn’t agree with media stereotypes of (probably white and at least middle if not upper-class) professional/career-oriented women who prefer shopping to cooking, but I mean, really. What the crap? I have been trying to compose a response to this piece for about a week, but so far I haven’t come up with anything coherent. A few more thoughts: (more…)
Monkey Monday: a survey, a menu, and more! 25 February 2008 11:25 pm
Posted by Tracy in : geekery, organic, eggs, nepal, pictures, people, meta, Morning Glory, restaurants , 2 commentsToday’s post is late because I was filling out a a web survey about eggs, about which, regular readers of this blog know, I’m sort of obsessed. If you’re in the habit of buying organic, cage free, humanely raised, free range, or otherwise hippie-friendly eggs, the folks behind this survey want to hear from you! For me the open-ended questions were like a series of useful writing prompts, so by the end of the survey (the optional questions, which you can skip if you’re not obsessed like me) I was copying the questions and my answers into a Google Document for future reference (and editing into TracyFood post form, most likely). Did I mention that I have strong opinions about eggs?
But speaking of some of the professional reasons for my strong opinions about eggs, the other reason this post is late is because I covered part of Beth’s shift at Morning Glory. Good times, especially the freaky 2-3 PM rush and the guy who wouldn’t take a hint and finally left at 4:15. Seriously, people, if you’re the only table left in the restaurant and the server tells you it’s past closing time, do the math. And leave a good tip, too. But I digress. Here’s this week’s organic specials: (more…)
