Monkey Monday: latest ever edition. 24 December 2007 6:15 am
Posted by Tracy in : work, pictures, monkeys, potatoes, Morning Glory, school, eating, books, meta, cooking , 1 comment so farHoly cats, readers. A week ago today at this time I was almost done pulling an all-nighter to get my NYU application submitted at 11:30 that Monday morning. Then I took a nap, and when I woke up I tried to write something monkeyish only to get distracted, a pattern that repeated every day last week. It was almost as if I’d spent a lot of writing energy on some major project and needed to rest that part of my brain, (she wrote, feeling slightly ridiculous for having hedged that statement AT ALL). Anyway. I figure there’s a good chance no one will read this on account of it being Christmas Eve, and now that I’m writing at all again I’m thinking my three-posts-a-week vacation plan is still a pretty good one, and all that adds up to a nice, low-preseasing myself back into the daily blog grind thing, which suits me fine. Read on for a teeny recap of the past week and some guesses about what I’ll be writing about for the next few days. Or don’t, but either way have a fantastic end of the year. (more…)

Then I will collapse on the couch and watch Ratatouille on DVD (it arrived in the mail on one of the last nights of (C)Han(n)uk(k)a(h), courtesy of my parents, and I’m honestly a little amazed that I haven’t been watching it ever since). Or maybe I will just sleep. Either way, I will definitely do something restful because I start a six-day stretch of shifts at Morning Glory on Saturday: Beth has had plans to be out of town this weekend since before I got back from Nepal, Josh is in Seattle for his father’s funeral, and Gail is getting ready for her annual winter trip to Mexico, which leaves me and Jen to rock like hurricanes in the kitchen all week, oh yes. It’s going to be a busy one, and for me it kicks off almost a month of covering lots and lots of shifts.
So. (more…)
Recipe: Gladys’s Rice and Bean Stew 13 December 2007 9:07 am
Posted by Tracy in : vegan, pictures, soup, recipes, vegetarian, cooking , 5 comments“Tastes like childhood.” That’s my note next to this recipe in my handwritten spiral notebook of very favorite dishes that aren’t published in any of the cookbooks I own. A photocopy of the original recipe is held to the opposite page are a promotional Post-It note for a drug called AcipHex (rabeprazole sodium), on which my mother’s handwriting asks, “Remember Gladys’s Rice & Bean?” Of course I remember, I think to myself every time I see that note. This is the kind of comfort food I refuse to forget.
Ah, what the heck. Here’s a scan of that original recipe. I have no idea where it’s from:
If you want, you could click through to Flickr for all the information needed to make this recipe more or less exactly as I do. What follows is the Tracy version of this dish, but I’ll explain what little changes I’ve made as I go along, so look for my parenthetical comments throughout the recipe. (more…)
Vegan MoFo Survey! 12 December 2007 9:05 am
Posted by Tracy in : chocolate, nepal, kitchen mishaps, pictures, kitchen gear, friends, eating, vegan, cooking , 2 commentsI learned about this game from Penny, who learned about it from the Post-Punk Kitchen blog (see Isa’s answers here) but the original blog post that got this game started is here. Long story short, it’s a fun list of questions for participants in Isa Chandra’s Vegan MoFo project, a delicious answer to National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo, for those of you who have never succumbed to its temptations). I think the object of the game was for everybody playing along to write a lot about delicious vegan food, but I sort of missed it because I was fresh back from Nepal and there was way too much internet-based excitement to catch up on. Also I’m not vegan. But I still thought this survey was fun. These are my answers from Tuesday evening at around 6 PM, but I’m not posting them until Wednesday morning because I’m a fickle beast like that. (more…)
Kitchen misadventure comics, especially for Chiara. 11 December 2007 8:16 am
Posted by Tracy in : friends, cooking , 2 commentsOur story begins last week, when Erika Moen posted this adorable comic about her cooking anxiety (click on the image to go to the full comic on Erika’s pages, which I highly recommend exploring):
and I posted a happy fangirl comment to say that it was the most awesome thing I had seen online in days, and that I wanted to staple a copy to my graduate school applications to give just a little example of how I’m fascinated by stories of how people learn to cook and why. (more…)
