Thursday “Things that make you go ‘hmmmm’ (or maybe ‘ew’)” 20 September 2007 11:24 pm
Posted by Tracy in : garden, breakfast, pictures, coconut, Marion Nestle, health, books , 1 comment so farI’m finally on the mend from the gnarly cold I’ve been complaining about all week, but I’m still not up to organizing my thoughts about miso soup into even the vaguest of guidelines, so that project will have to wait for tomorrow. Instead, more randomness, starting with the awesome, proceeding to the relatively inoffensive and ranging all the way out to really, really gross (so if at any point in this entry you think “okay, that’s too gross for me to read any further,” I implore you — bail out! Come back tomorrow to read about fermented soybean paste soup, which I am only describing in those terms because “kinda gross” is a funny theme for this evening. (more…)
Notable and/or quotable: stuff I read today. 19 September 2007 9:13 pm
Posted by Tracy in : garden, health, news, agriculture, cooking , add a commentI haven’t been writing well today (in part because I’m still a little sick but I shouldn’t brag or make excuses). Fortunately, I’ve been reading lots of good stuff, so I’ll refer you thataway for now:
“Out-of-house eating refers to restaurants, cantines, (office, school, hospital), snack bars, all-manner of takeaway including everything from gas station sandwich bars to supermarket catering.”
— Debra Solomon in Whose bread I eat, his song I sing on her fantastic Culiblog, most recently updated with the aforementioned very thoughtful essay about a food industry conference in Rotterdam. (more…)
A discovery (in pictures) 18 September 2007 11:15 pm
Posted by Tracy in : pictures, news, eugene, restaurants , add a commentSo this afternoon/evening after work I found myself walking home while talking on my cell phone (because it is NOT SAFE for me to talk and ride at the same time, oh no). I was making pretty good time until I passed this sign:
Monkey Monday: home sick edition 17 September 2007 5:47 pm

Later in the week this little bout of upper respiratory yuckiness will probably translate into a post about miso soup (I hesitate to call my approach to miso soup a recipe), but for now all I’m good for is sitting on the couch with the cats, catching up on my Google Reader. I had miso soup and echinacea tea for breakfast, with Yorkshire Gold black tea for dessert. For lunch I had no-knead bread, and I’m thinking of making tomato soup with extra garlic for dinner, because I believe in feeding a cold, dangit. My other project for the day is updating my reading list, in particular to make note of my shiny new used copy of Stand Facing the Stove which Powells had just for me for $5 on this weekend’s trip to Portland, yay! My excitement might even be enough to get me to finally finish writing a review of this fantastic history-biography.
But Tracy, don’t you usually work on Mondays?
Recipe: Blended Tomato Soup with Accidental Garlic 14 September 2007 11:21 pm
Posted by Tracy in : soup, vegan, recipes, vegetarian, eating, cooking , 1 comment so farMore comfort food today, and another cut-and-paste-and-rewrite from Everything2. I had to work today, which was a good thing as it kept me from spending the entire day stewing about my stupid good-but-not-great GRE score, and I came home too tired to do anything but wash (mmm, bath) and have tea and brownies (Peter’s way of reminding me that even stupid computer tests can’t stop deliciousness) and eat delicious tomato sandwiches for dinner. Appropriately enough, tonight I also finished reading The $64 Tomato by William Alexander, and the following recipe also prominently features tomato tastiness. Enjoy. (more…)
