I worked a three-day weekend, covering a shift on Sunday, and then had dinner at Peter’s advisor’s house instead of writing anything for TracyFood last night. Sorry! Dear restaurant customers,

I don’t hate you all, I really don’t. Without you, I wouldn’t have my job, which is a pretty cool one. But, as I wrote you once a few years ago, some of you are behave in ways that make me so angry I forget that the vast majority of you aren’t complete asses. Then, I wrote about the importance of courtesy, kindness, and freaking reading the menu. Today I am repeating two of those three very important themes, but my topic is new: understanding a restaurant’s hours of operation. (more…)

The fine folks at Kitchen Garden International recently called my attention to an interesting statistical fact: 2005 marked the first time that U.S. consumers spent more on foods consumed outside the home than foods prepared at home, for the first time since the USDA started tracking such data in 1953. I had the idea for this post before I decided to make this restaurant stories week, but it’s better than ever now that it fits that theme. Woo-hoo! Anyway… Google Reader has been eating my brain ever since I started using it, but it’s been especially awesome ever since I got back from our stupendous summer bike adventure and found it full of literally hundreds of articles clamoring for my attention. Most recently, while catching up on the New York Times Op-Ed page, Trevor Corson’s July 15 piece, “Sushi for Two” made me all kinds of nostalgic for the best sushi I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating, the offerings at Hapi Sushi in Laguna Beach. (Note to self: plan big bad West Coast bike trip and schedule several days for eating our way through Orange County.) (more…)

I discovered the Casing the Joint restaurant blog for San Diego’s The Linkery restaurant as a result of Jay’s post Market vs. Nature last month, which got some well-deserved love from other food geeks I read.
