If a reader had written me something like,

Dear FoodTracy,

I loved learning from all the stupid mistakes you wrote about on Monday! Do you have any more hilarious tales of food-related foolishness?

I would have a fantastic answer this week, oh yes. It goes something like this:

* * * * *

Dear reader,

If a coworker at your awesome hippie cooking job asks you to cover a kitchen shift so that she can go to her sister’s graduation, check the freaking calendar and make sure it’s not the same weekend your brother’s scheduled to graduate! I’m just saying. And, um, maybe that goes for all jobs, not just the ones with awesome hippie food in them.

Love,
-Tracy

P.S. All’s well that ends well, I think: Much drama and many pathetic cell phone messages and one slightly tear-stained visit to Morning Glory later, I have wrangled some semblance of a miracle and will in fact be making a whirlwind trip to Vermont this weekend. I am rocking a crushing guilt complex six weeks from next Tuesday about promising a day I couldn’t work, especially what with all the other schedule madness going on this weekend (two of four cooks are at graduations, and one of the other two was scheduled to work the floor on Saturday, and last I heard there’s still an hour or so of her shift unaccounted for so I basically owe everybody the rest of my tips for the month). Furthermore, there are of course pretty much no words to describe the hilarity of the part where I get back on this coast a whopping eight hours before work on Monday. Oh, and yesterday a doctor told me to cut back on stimulants like stress and caffeine. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Now, I know part of this plan was ever sane — no part of any plan where I travel cross-country for less than a week is — but as I told my dad when the scheduling mayhem kicked back into full swing yesterday, I think I’m getting old.

P.P.S. Of course, he laughed at me.

    Hi Tracy! Trips and scheduling have been a little crazy around here as well. Hope everything works out dandily. Where in VT?

    Hi Chris! I’ll be flying from Eugene to Rutland for Piett’s graduation from Castleton State College. And now I should do laundry so as to have clothes to wear on this expedition.
