Foto Friday: the TracyFood week in review 27 April 2007 11:40 pm
Posted by Tracy in : garden, pictures, seasonality, baking, school , trackbackRead on to discover why this post is going up at the last minute; I promise it’s a very good reason. Also, there’s pictures of some other stuff I did before today as well. For instance, I baked not one but two beautiful loaves of whole wheat no-knead bread, first on Tuesday:
and then again on Thursday:
Here’s Thursday’s loaf next to all that was left of Tuesday’s loaf:
In case all the pictures don’t make it clear, I still get excited every time this recipe works. But this week I had a little extra excitement, because for once I wasn’t left with a bone-dry cast iron pan after bread baking:
It’s not a very good picture, but trust me, that’s beautiful. So was the weather for the past several days, and the weekend is supposed to be gorgeous as well, which means more scenes like this at the Urban Farm:
or so I’ll tell myself when I’m working Saturday and Sunday, because it makes me so very happy. (All these pictures link back to Flickr, where you can see for yourself that those greens in the front have made a very good recovery from being seriously munched in their first week after transplant.) I think it was Wednesday when I had the revelation that I wouldn’t have to worry about cat-proofing a community garden plot. Color me ever so intrigued by that idea, oh yes. Also color me glad to have enjoyed today’s lovely weather, first by reading on the back porch (click on the picture to find out what those books are):
and later by dutifully stopping by the Urban Farm to water our garden plots (we planted beans on Thursday, and seeds love moisture to go with all the springtime warmth) and admire the blooming fava bean plants:
before heading home via the hippie home and garden store, where I was very restrained and only got starts for shallots and brussels sprouts and one adorable little baby artichoke plant. Then I played in my own garden. I rigged up a trellis for the peas I planted in February, which are finally starting to kick in for reals, and I planted beans (scarlet runner and other pole beans) and I discovered these mystery sproutlings all over the place:
What on earth could they be? They might be weeds, but they were so densely packed in places that I thought maybe I’d spilled seeds or something. And then I found the answer:
They’re tomatoes! Or they will be, if I successfully transplanted any of them (and you can bet I did my very best, even if it was too dark for pictures by the time I got done, and then it was time for dinner and a shower to wash off all the garden dirt and that’s why I’m posting so late but also so happy). Hurray tomatoes! Especially if I’m correctly guessing that they’re the descendants of last year’s Sungold cherry tomatoes, which were like delicious golden candy… though I won’t be too sorely disappointed if they turn out to be yellow pear or regular old red cherry tomatoes, oh no.
Yay garden! And happy weekend, readers!
