Monkey Monday: one-a-penny edition. 9 April 2007 9:34 pm

I got the recipe from Culinate’s review of Celebration Breads: Recipes, Tales and Traditions by Betsy Oppenneer, but Caitlin gave me the idea of using the stand mixer to wrangle the dough, like so:

Woo action shot! I had never used the dough hook before, and I also got to switch mixer attachments mid-recipe when I went from whisking to kneading. So awesome!
I halved the recipe in case I didn’t like the results, and besides, I only had half a cup of currants. Also I added cardamom, because it was in the recipe Caitlin used and also I love it so very much. Later in the evening Peter concocted rhubarb sauce which we ate this morning on tapioca pudding — the breakfast of champions, I tell you what. Yay springtime food! It’s amazing I’ve been able to resist asparagus for so long, but most of what I’ve seen in stores is still coming up from Mexico. I can wait.
In other news, I was so pleasantly pleased with the results of last week’s quinoa experiment that on Saturday night I went on to further cross-cultural culinary bastardizations with Curried Quinoa from Moosewood Restaurant New Classics (where else?) Yay for spicy tasty goodness! But I’m starting to get a little weirded out by all this quinoa out of context, so I’ve resolved to try some more Western Hemisphere-oriented recipes next: New Classics has a very promising recipe called Pan-American Grits based on their Grits with Quinoa recipe, and perhaps better still is a dish called Peruvian Quinoa Stew in Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home.
Let’s see, what else? Well, it looks like I’m gonna have to suck it up and finally start reading Achewood, because this Salon excerpt from the cookbook is freakin’ brilliant. Homeboy knows his home fries is all I’m gonna say. The bit about waiters with dreadlocks almost made me choke on the leftover taters I brought home from work today. Which reminds me — today at work I got to eat my very first Fusion, and it was delicious! (The Fusion is Morning Glory’s vegan “omelette” of seasoned tofu and mushrooms and onions wrapped in a potato shell — my TracyFood entry about our menu is here and the menu page with the Fusion on it is here.) And now all that’s left of my random scavengings from work is an organic and vegan pain au chocolat from the day-old pastry pile, and just mentioning it makes me want a cup of tea, so I’d better get on that. Yum!
Happy Monday, everyone!
