I’m finally relaxing a bit after losing way too much sleep on my sustainable agriculture paper (ugh) and then I found this relic of my time in the Sundance cheese department while doing some much-needed spring cleaning in the office — would you believe there’s a floor in there sometimes? But now, behold the glory of Crater Lake Blue by Rogue Creamery:
Yes, that is a scan of the actual label and foil from a ~5-poundwheel of a cheese that is very near and dear to my heart (no, I didn’t eat the whole thing; for one thing, it’s strong stuff, and for another, it’s expensive). Click on the picture for a bigger version (and slightly more readable small print!)
Crater Lake Blue taught me to like blue (bleu?) cheese, and for that I will love it forever. I first tasted it as part of a cheese platter at a now-defunct Eugene restaurant called Zelaya, the night of my 25th birthday. Rich and creamy, with a texture that is firm, but not too crumbly, Crater Lake Blue tastes like butter laced with the perfect amount of mold, and deserves all the medals on that label brags, oh yes. Its cousin, Oregon Blue, is another raw milk blue cheese with a slightly saltier tang, if you like that sort of thing. I do not miss much about my time as the Sundance cheese beast, but disposing of the crumbs after cutting and wrapping the good stuff was a pretty decent perk. Yum.
And now I really must sleep.
